Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

R. O. Lane discovered westerns in high school when he read Shane by Jack Schaefer. He so enjoyed the book, he read every work by Schaefer. He's loved hundreds of western authors, his favorites, besides Schaefer, being Louis L'Amour, Gordon D. Shirreffs, Elmore Leonard and Matt Braun.

From his base in Tucson, Arizona, R. O. has traveled all over the western states. He's lived in Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Utah and Arizona. Although never having lived in Texas, he has traveled the state extensively and loves its history as is evident from a number of the westerns he's written. He continues to write every day for his own pleasure and that of his readers.

R. O. has B. A. in English and an M. A. in communications research. He worked as a writer and editor for three daily newspapers and has written dozens of speeches for senior officers of three Fortune 500 corporations.

He was recently quoted in an interview as saying, "Writing has been my life, and now I'm writing the westerns that were my first love. Nobody can fully understand how tough life was in the West, or the courage it took to settle a new land with all its challenges. Those who were equal to the task were heroes and heroines, and their lives are worth remembering. I'm a romantic at heart, and I don't apologize for it. It's evident in every book I write. If you don't want romance in your westerns, well ... I hate to say it, you should probably look elsewhere."

He's also written two love stories, including the novel Air Force Brats, A Love Story and Wishin' and Waitin', a novella.

R O Lane is my favorite author. He is a great storyteller, writes action-packed, fast-paced, clean, spellbinding tales with a touch of romance that are well-written and developed, yet he keeps them fairly short. He really knows how to grab the reader at the onset, take him/her on a ride, and not let go until the last page.

Moe Hankins is a perfect example of his intriguing storyline. The story begins when this 20-year-old protagonist and his fellow confederate soldiers surrender and he heads off to Montana to look for gold.

Moe teams up with a half-breed Indian and they hit the jackpot finding enough gold to make them rich for life; however, a group of men killed his partner and stole his gold.

The leader of the robbers kills his companions and heads out to parts unknown. Moe attempted to hunt down the killers but did not know where to look. He becomes a U. S. Marshall and is on the trail when he hears rifle shots. Heading in that direction he finds 2 gold minors on the ground. One is dead and the other is dying when he begs Moe to find his wife and tell her he was sorry for leaving her.

As luck would have it, he goes to his first opera and low and behold he spots one of the killers sitting with a woman and arrests the robber and reclaims his fortune. He decides not to arrest the woman who turned out to be the robber’s wife. She closed her account at a bank taking $40,000 of his money that her husband had stolen.

Heading out to find the dead man’s wife and tell her what happens, Moe settles in a town and discovers the local gunsmith was the dead man’s widow. They develop a friendship that becomes more.

This was a satisfying tale that I recommend to those who love well-developed characters and storylines in this genre that are suited for readers of all ages and is very intertwining.

Enjoy!

If it was a very good read, what is you only give it four stars?
That's easy to answer. It wasn't long enough. Mr Lane is a very good writer and this isn't the first book of his that I've read. It won't be the last book that I have read either.
I won't give away any secrets, and there'll be no hints either. I will tell you that the book has danger, adventure, terror, good guys doing good things, and bad guys doing bad things. Oh and I forgot to say, there is a little romance. It's none of that torn bodice, deep breathing, or sweat and yells of joy that you find in other books.
The good guy does get the girl and they live happily ever after, but getting there leaves enough scars to keep a few doctors in business.
This is just good old cowboy writing.
I recommend this book.

I enjoyed the story very much. Lots of action and lots of heart. It did seem like the main character was too strong or too lucky, but if not, the book would have been much briefer. It was very engaging.

Love this story and the characters in it. Some sadness, some justice, some fun, loyal friends and generosity. I really enjoyed this story a lot. I've read over 200 books in the last four years and not too many have given me the feeling of satisfaction like this one. Thank you R.O. Lane

I enjoyed reading a story where a good moral person despite difficult circumstances persists forging ahead bringing other good people with him. Willing to learn new things making himself a better man. This story was all of that and also had adventures and bravery!

Story rattled along, at a pace maintained throughout the book. Quite a cast of characters introduced (and removed!) in the narrative. Moe quite a well drawn personality who was quite believable, especially as he was wounded so often. Thoroughly enjoyed my first read of a publication by Mr Lane but will not be the last.
