It seems like most of Ron Schwab's novels have been set in the era immediately post-Civil War, with westward expansion, and Civil War veterans from both sides aplenty. Bushwa is the backstory for a character that appears in later books, and takes place in the early years of the Civil War, as the Confederacy is trying establish a foothold in the West, and the Union is trying to prevent that.

Bushwa, of course, is a colorful character, but one of the charming things about this book is that it introduces us to new characters who will hopefully play a role in future books. Win and Ren become a couple, and could, undoubtedly, provide us with many more stories in their New Mexico Territory home after Bushwa has left for Wyoming.

Great character development, just enough history to teach us all a little bit about the unknown "western front" of the Civil War, and a story that splits friends Bushwa and Win apart for a while, telling both of their stories on parallel paths, until they meet up again and say goodbye.

An quick read for a cold afternoon or a couple of evenings!

BUSHWA is a great story, and doesn't really end on a cliffhanger, but you know there's got to be more before he makes his way to Lockwood.
He's sort of a decent man and friend. Especially if he can make a profit. And he usually does, but. And it's the buts that make it such a good read.
Loved all characters and their stories.
If you like to read C.J. Petit or James Leonard you'll love Ron Schwab. They all know where to stop a story and leave their readers wanting more. *sigh*
