Gone To Texas: A Western Adventure Novel (The Stirling Family Saga Book 1) Kindle Edition

The first Western adventure in a brand new series!

Elias Stirling reads an article in a St. Louis newspaper that stirs his barely-contained desire to get away from the grist mill in Buffalo Lick, MO, where he has labored for years. The article tells him about free land available for settlers in the new Republic of Texas. His thoughts of building a cattle ranch in Texas consume him.

Eventually, he convinces his two sons and their families to make the move with him. Several of his neighbors decide they want a change, too, but they have no idea of the difficulties moving from Missouri to Texas will bring.

In addition to the stresses of travel, Elias and the rest will deal with issues they bring with them—issues that many families have to handle from time to time, but which make their trip all the more challenging.

After a grueling two months on the trail, they get to the Guadalupe River north of San Antonio, Texas. But is the end of their trials or only the beginning?

C. Wayne Winkle is a retired psychologist who grew up watching the great western heroes on television. Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Lash LaRue, and the Lone Ranger were on every Saturday morning. And, of course, Louis L’Amour is still one of his favorite authors. More recently, he has become very interested in mysteries and thrillers. Winkle has been married to the same wonderful woman for 46 years. They have six of the best grandkids anyone could possibly want. His faith in Jesus Christ is a mainstay in his foundation of life. Winkle lives in western Arkansas, “the eyebrow of Indian Territory.”

A Grist Mill owner wants to stop working his grandfather’s and father’s dream of doing back breaking work as a Milner. Don’t blame him. He reads an article in a newspaper about free land given to settlers to help build Texas. Love Elias the father and his new wife, Abigail—need to know the sons better. Wives in this story are a little on the weak and snotty side. I hope they prove up later in the story. Plenty of adventures on the way. Glad Albert proves to be a friend so far. Hope some of these family members buck up and become strong pioneers.

C.W.W. didn't put much imagination or effort into the writing of this story. Repetitive events provided a roadmap of what was to come, or how it would turn out.

I enjoyed this book, but I think the author has skimped on details that I would like to know about. I also was wondering why I heard nothing about religion. These were God fearing people. Their faith and belief were sometimes all that kept them going. I will definitely read the next one.
