The Unhired Hand Kindle Edition

A Wyoming homesteader family settles in a little valley only to find that a big cattleman hates all "nesters." The cattle baron hires a shooter to kill one of the homesteaders as a way to threatening all the others. A stranger named Dutch comes into the valley and accepts an invitation to supper. He stays even though the family can't pay him. He helps them fence their property and fight off the cattle baron, who believes might makes right. Dutch warns him off, but the cattle baron's hatred runs deep. Finally, Dutch has had enough and fulfills his promise to eliminate the threat to the homesteaders. This is another classic western from the pen of R. O. Lane.

R. O. Lane discovered westerns in high school when he read Shane by Jack Schaefer. He so enjoyed the book, he read every work by Schaefer. He's loved hundreds of western authors, his favorites, besides Schaefer, being Louis L'Amour, Gordon D. Shirreffs, Elmore Leonard and Matt Braun.

From his base in Tucson, Arizona, R. O. has traveled all over the western states. He's lived in Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Utah and Arizona. Although never having lived in Texas, he has traveled the state extensively and loves its history as is evident from a number of the westerns he's written. He continues to write every day for his own pleasure and that of his readers.

R. O. has B. A. in English and an M. A. in communications research. He worked as a writer and editor for three daily newspapers and has written dozens of speeches for senior officers of three Fortune 500 corporations.

He was recently quoted in an interview as saying, "Writing has been my life, and now I'm writing the westerns that were my first love. Nobody can fully understand how tough life was in the West, or the courage it took to settle a new land with all its challenges. Those who were equal to the task were heroes and heroines, and their lives are worth remembering. I'm a romantic at heart, and I don't apologize for it. It's evident in every book I write. If you don't want romance in your westerns, well ... I hate to say it, you should probably look elsewhere."

He's also written two love stories, including the novel Air Force Brats, A Love Story and Wishin' and Waitin', a novella.

The Unhired Man is another well-written old western tale written by R O Lane. Like his other novels this one is short. It is 185-pages, but both characters and the storyline are well-developed.

The tale begins in Wyoming territory in the spring of 1884 when Noah Buckley was just 8 years old. His dad, Abner, and his mother, Emma were farmers that a local bully, Nate Treadwell who owned The Circle T ranch and was harassing the Buckley’s and all of the local homesteaders. He offered the settlers $2 per acre and when they refused he hassled them trying to scare them off and take all of the familiy’s land. Treadwell even hired a killer who murdered a local neighbor whose wife and kids were still in Germany waiting to move to their new home.

A cowboy, named Dutch came upon the Buckley homestead and asked if he could water his horse, Blue. The family invited Dutch in for dinner and told him about Treadwell, the harassing neighbor. Abner told him about Nate’s ranch hands running their longhorn cattle through Emma’s garden during their most recent episode destroying the mass majority of the plants.

It turns out that Dutch knew of Treadwell from his confederate army days. Nate was a deserter from the Confederate Army in Texas who's on father disowned him.

Abner was telling Dutch that he planned to build a fence around both the garden and the ranch to try to keep Treadwell’s cattle of his property. That is how Dutch became the Buckley’s “Unhired Hand.” Dutch, Abner, Noah cut the post and installed the fence within a year and Dutch dealt with Nates hired killers warning him that he would kill him if of the consequence of future harassment.

Dutch mores on, but the harassment began again.

I am not a fan of novels that are one long narrative in first person by the main character. This book starts off with the words of an eight year old boy. I began to learn of other characters in the story through his observations and thoughts. But the story unfolds without the boys' constant input, who only speaks up here and there , on and off for a couple of years. There are several understated romances and several violent events. The sum of those parts and the interludes connecting those make a great story.
