The Cattle Kid (American Post-Civil War Westerns) Kindle Edition
It’s the Big Die Up – the worst winter in anybody’s memory.
With the little help he has left, Garret fights to spare his loved ones from a lonely, frigid death on the open range and learns the ways of ranching so they may survive.
Come springtime, everybody’s cattle are half-dead and the money has evaporated from the once booming industry… with one exception.
Delmer Potter. His fortunes are securely built on a foundation of ruthlessness. And he’s spending it all to buy land from the desperate ranchers of Wyoming.
Garret isn’t giving up the family ranch for anybody or anything. But Delmer Potter is used to getting what he wants. Even if it means shedding blood.
With Delmer’s finger itching for a trigger to pull, everybody in Garret’s life becomes a target for his underhanded scheming – even Lina Gainey.
Lina Gainey. Garret’s secret love. He can’t imagine a future without her, and Delmer knows it.
Can Garret save the family ranch from the heartless outsiders? Or will Delmer’s bullets tear apart the people that Garret swears to protect?
Another classic western with respectful romance and women as strong frontier folk from author William Black.
Note: Each book in the American Post-Civil War Westerns series is a standalone story that can be read out of order.

Nellie says, The wolves are so cute… would make a wonderful pet— then she goes out into the snow to save the wolves from her brother’s rifle???
At this point I returned the book. Just totally unrealistic that even a child, one born on a large working ranch in the depths of a major winter storm would be so ignorant.
