Gold Rush Rhapsody Kindle Edition

It's the story of Luke Parker, who comes to San Francisco in 1852 after his wife dies in Delaware of influenza. It's at the height of the gold rush and the beginnings of the city of San Francisco. Luke finds his niche in the business world, adopts a young Irish lad and marries a gifted and talented musician. She teaches all the children to love music and to play various musical instruments. When his little daughter is kidnapped, he meets another side of himself, a brutal side that protects his family at all costs. Another western tale from the pen of R. O. Lane.

R. O. Lane discovered westerns in high school when he read Shane by Jack Schaefer. He so enjoyed the book, he read every work by Schaefer. He's loved hundreds of western authors, his favorites, besides Schaefer, being Louis L'Amour, Gordon D. Shirreffs, Elmore Leonard and Matt Braun.

From his base in Tucson, Arizona, R. O. has traveled all over the western states. He's lived in Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Utah and Arizona. Although never having lived in Texas, he has traveled the state extensively and loves its history as is evident from a number of the westerns he's written. He continues to write every day for his own pleasure and that of his readers.

R. O. has B. A. in English and an M. A. in communications research. He worked as a writer and editor for three daily newspapers and has written dozens of speeches for senior officers of three Fortune 500 corporations.

He was recently quoted in an interview as saying, "Writing has been my life, and now I'm writing the westerns that were my first love. Nobody can fully understand how tough life was in the West, or the courage it took to settle a new land with all its challenges. Those who were equal to the task were heroes and heroines, and their lives are worth remembering. I'm a romantic at heart, and I don't apologize for it. It's evident in every book I write. If you don't want romance in your westerns, well ... I hate to say it, you should probably look elsewhere."

He's also written two love stories, including the novel Air Force Brats, A Love Story and Wishin' and Waitin', a novella.

R O Lane is my favorite author. Gold Rush Rhapsody like his other tales is a fast-paced, action-packed, and compelling story that is really hard to put down. Even though the 3-part book is only 204 pages, like always his characters and storyline is well-developed.

This tale begins in early the early 1850’s in Delaware where Luke Parker’s wife dies from influenza. She was the love of his life and when she died, he inherited money left to her by her deceased parents.

A brilliant businessman, Luke moves to San Francisco and hires August, a knowledgeable real-estate businessman during the gold rush era who recommended properties for Luke to buy cheap and sell high increasing Luke’s net worth substantially.

In town an orphaned pre teenage Irish Lad, Dylan, who was being chased by a gang who wanted to drown him. Luke takes a liking to him and decides to protect him. After the gang beats him nearly to death, he shows up at Luke’s apartment where Luke gets him medical help, provides a room for him to live, takes care of him financially, and eventually adopts him

There were many more men than women in San Francisco and after August invites Luke to diner trying to play match maker for his divorced sister, Leni and Luke, the couple hit it off and eventually married and had a little girl of their own.

I really like that Lane writes clean books that can be read by anyone regardless of age. The engaging tales are a joy to read. I recommend this and his other books to family, friends, and others who enjoy well-written and developed old western tales.

Enjoy!

This could have been my first 5 star, until near the end, when it became bogged down in the musical side of things. I like my westerns untainted by religion or music. Sorry but that’s the way I roll. Max.
