But Jane doesn’t have much time. She’s just received a terminal diagnosis giving her twelve months.

Unless she’s murdered before her expiration date.

Fast-paced! Loved Jane Smith!
Many thanks to Little, Brown {partner} for my gifted copy.Friends, I’m so happy to be sharing 12 MONTHS TO LIVE with you today as part of the #JamesPattersonStreetTeam It’s the first in the new Jane Smith series and I’m already looking forward to the next!Jane is a character that I quickly grew to love. She’s a smart, takes no crap, and is just the right amount of sarcastic for me. I’m also a fan of her partner, Jimmy Cunniff, ex NYPD cop and boundary-pushing sidekick investigator. The story is a faced-paced courtroom drama meets mystery/thriller with short, action-packed chapters that made it almost impossible to put down.

From one chapter to the next…suspense and a magnificent “who really done it?” Getting ready for book 2. Can’t wait!

I have gotten away from Patterson’s books but this new one drew me in with its intriguing title.

Twelve Months to Live is a legal thriller with a strong female protagonist who controls and holds on tightly to the storyline. Even though she has received a deadly diagnosis with a year to live, she fights her way through a tough trial with a client she does not trust or believe, in his innocence.

Jane F. Smith, though having a plain and common moniker, is anything but. She takes charge in everything she does, never resting to take a breath. She even continues to train for a biathlon in her weakening state of health after chemo. There are two likable male characters that support her or at least try to throughout the grueling trial.

I found this story at first to be irritating with its staccato-type prose, sentences that weren’t sentences. As I continued to read, the prose smoothed out and I grew to respect and admire the character Jane for her stamina in the toughest times. This is definitely a different style of writing for Patterson as he pulls in other authors to combine their talents.

I did enjoy this book and look forward to the next in the series.

Well, that will teach me not to listen to advertising.

I have kind of stopped reading Patterson since he started writing with co-authors. Some books are better than others, depending on who the co-author is. Patterson says he likes developing plots but likes others to write them.

Patterson and co-author Lupica (and later their wives) have made ads where they talk about how this is the best book they have ever written. Their enthusiasm is so intense that I broke down and got the book.

They are wrong.

This is an OK book, but definitely nothing like the earlier books that Patterson wrote by himself. I only give it 2-1/2 stars.

Jane is a defense attorney who has been hired to defend a guy she is pretty sure killed a family of 3, but who says he's innocent. As she is about to defend him in court, she learns that she has Stage 4 cancer and is given 12 months to live. (Patterson says the other two books in the series will be called "6 months to live" and "3 months to live.")

There's a lot of killing, a lot of threats to be killed, and witnesses who can either provide her client with an alibi or make it sound like he did it. After a lengthy trial (during which her cancer symptoms plague her because she refuses to take chemo), a verdict is given and we still aren't sure if it is the right verdict or not.

As I said, this is an OK story and it kept my attention, but I longed for a page turner to read and found it in a Harlan Coben book that I stared when I finished this one.

This is a quick read, keeps you guessing until the end. Jane Smith is a great new detective and should be an exciting one to follow to the next book in the series.

This is a compelling legal thriller. A page-turner that you will find hard to put down. It features a very strong female attorney, Jane Smith, who’s hired to defend wealthy, handsome, scumbag Rob Jacobson charged with a triple murder.

The strength of the book is the pace and the characterization of Jane Smith, a vulnerable superhero.

The book rates four stars because, to facilitate the pace, there are too many murders and shootings. The point-of-view alternates between Jane Smith and her investigator, Jimmy Cunniff; sometimes this is confusing. Finally, the setting is the wealthy New York suburb of Nassau County, where apparently the biggest social problem is parking during the holidays.

Patterson has sold 425 million books. Read 12 Months to Live to understand his appeal.

James Patterson is the ultimate storyteller. I’ve read every book that Patterson has written. I think it’s a tossup between Patterson and Dave Baldacci. Boat great writers I know as I am writing this but Jane Smith book 2 is available. Can’t wait to get it.

Just finished last night. Whilst it was a good story in total, I could tell which parts were written by Patterson and which parts were ghost written. He "had" his own style and mass producing these books is starting to tell.
Hey, that's my opinion, but I'm not a recognised critic....

4.0 out of 5 stars New characters and narrative, but just didn't grab me the way I had hoped
Reviewed in Canada on November 19, 2023
I like these out-of-series books by Patterson and coauthors, as they establish new characters and plot mechanisms that don't fit in other series. This one, though, was a slightly mixed bag for me. I enjoyed the story and the narrative, which is different from most other Patterson books, but I found it not quite as gripping as some of his other books. It's still enjoyable, and a good read, but it just didn't grab me as much as I had hoped. Still, an interesting story to enjoy.

As per usual - very easy to read - short punchy chapters - Tough macho characters with dialogue to match. A real sense of "did he or didn't he?" and honestly I enjoyed it though I do feel the ending to be diapointing (hope that isn't a "spoiler"). Would I read another Jane Smith novel....Probably!
