The Victory of Greenwood Hardcover – June 2, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
The Victory of Greenwood invites readers to learn more about the full history of the Greenwood community, aka "Black Wall Street", through the lives of some of its most prominent figures such as John & Loula Williams, B.C. Franklin, and Rev. Ben H. Hill.
This new collection of 20 historical biographies dispels myths and inaccuracies about the events leading up to the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 via newly discovered primary sources, and shows Greenwood's local and national significance after its rebuilding, to today.
On June 2nd, 1921, the Red Cross began a relief effort from Booker T. Washington High School campus, the only buildings left undamaged by
the attack on Greenwood. Meanwhile, residents started working on rebuilding their homes and entrepreneurs such as Loula Williams set about re-establishing their businesses. Attorney B. C. Franklin successfully sued the City of Tulsa, leading to Greenwood's revival, which lasted well into the late 1960s. People from the Greenwood area had a continuing impact on the world of music, the Civil Rights Movement, medical technology, and computer technology through the 1940s and the present day.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"As the pastor of the longest standing edifice in Greenwood, I believe The Victory of Greenwood project is a testament to the resiliency and ingenuity of the founders, builders, and rebuilders of Greenwood. These are stories that MUST be told in order to provide the complete and historically accurate history of this community. Our children need to know that they come from a long and successful line of amazing entrepreneurs that not only built a thriving community but rebuilt it after the Massacre despite attempts by others to prevent this. This is not just a Tulsa conversation, this is a national conversation."
- Dr. Reverend Robert Turner, Pastor, Vernon AME Church
"The scope of work and depth of research presented by The Victory of Greenwood has already taught many of us in the Greenwood community things we did not know before this project existed. These diligently researched biographies really bring these individuals to life and provide a much broader picture of the history of Greenwood than has been seen to date. We are truly grateful that a more complete narrative of the history of Greenwood and its leaders is being made available to not only Tulsa residents, but to the nation."
- Frances Jordan, Executive Director, The Greenwood Cultural Center
"The painstakingly documented nature of this work is one of the things that makes it so strong."
- Tim Madigan, author of The Burning: The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921

As a 4th-generation Unitarian (Universalist) myself, I never had the luxury of having a starry-eyed vision of the denomination. Many people who first encounter the faith as adults are victim to just that. Their almost palpable joy and relief at finding religious liberalism and embodied within a faith so different than the one in which they may have been raised -- one with which they may have strongly disagreed, one they may have felt completely disillusioned with, one they may callously have been abused by -- seems to blind them to reality.
There is no perfect faith, there is no perfect religion, and there is no perfect denomination - not even Unitarian Universalism.
Any institution created by and/or entrusted to human beings will be subject to the laws of human nature. That includes Unitarian Universalism. The denomination would have been (and still will be) well served to keep its feet firmly planted on the ground, remaining ever vigilant about its institutional introspection and mindfulness.
This book, written by an outsider (a non-UU), has had the courage to tell difficult truths simply and with clarity. Had Unitarian Universalism been the beneficiary of its wisdom much earlier (and had chosen to actively embraced it), there very likely would have been a 5th generation of UUs in my family. Sadly for the denomination, they did not ...and so there is not.
While it's too late for my family, it's not too late for those who are currently proud to call themselves UU and find the faith and it's fellowshipping deeply enriching to their lives and their spiritual journeys. But, heeding the wake-up call of this book and choosing to ardently foment substantial major change within the faith is needed to ensure that the future of the faith -- those children raised in the bosom of UU religious liberalism - will remain committed to the denomination.
I was once one of those children, yet that chance was squandered. Now an adult, Unitarian Universalism is a denomination with which I have strong disagreements, feel completely disillusioned with, and was callously abused by. Durall's book has touched upon some aspects of the discontent felt by other former UU children like me who now consider ourselves "recovering UUs."
