The CW app is by far the best running, cleanest and most intuitive app I have ever had the pleasure to use on my Fire TV Stick. It hands down blows every other app out of the water both in terms of picture quality and performance as well. This really is the Gold Standard that other developers should strive for. It is truly optimized for the platform and best of all 100% free, as in all the content, no cable company credentials required. Finally a network tv app that works the way it should. It's basically perfect with the exception of minimal ads that are way less intrusive, frequent or disruptive than Hulu or Crackle. I've watched the CW since I was a kid. My favorite shows have been Vampire Diaries and superhero shows like Arrow and Flash. While none of those shows are currently on the app the content changes constantly/season to season. I was able to watch for free a few different shows that I'd never heard of but enjoy. The app is well-designed and easy to use. I didn't sign up for anything nor have to have a current cable subscription but I imagine if you had that access you'd be able to stream more content than myself. Seems like a good streaming app so far and I can't beat free so it's something that I'd recommend. :)

I went into this app not expecting much. I got a new Fire Cube, and was extremely interested in trying this app on my television. I have to say, I don’t regret it!
The app is easy to navigate through and includes a variety of different shows. I have to say, I wish there were more available—but the ones that currently are are extremely great!
There are ads when watching, which is expected considering you’re watching the shows WITHOUT any kind of subscription. So deal with it!
There have been a few times where the app would crash because an ad fails to load, which is disappointing. It’s not a constant issue, but has happened multiple times.
But in short, give this app a go. Nothing beats free entertainment without a subscription!

[3/11/17 update] Very disappointingly, the cc bug has returned, with the video getting stuck at the commercials when close captions are turned on. I thought perhaps the problem might be with my Fire TV (first generation), so I switched to my Fire TV Stick 2 to check. Same problem. In fact, the problem might be even worse here because sometimes the video gets stuck even before the commercials are reached.

For now, I'm switching back and forth to my Roku which doesn't have this problem. And, in fact, I'm even considering waiting until the CW shows come out on Netflix, since they play there with no commercials.

[11/21/16 update] The CC bug has been fixed with the release of version 1.0.2. If you're still having the problem of your videos pausing at the commercials you may need to uninstall the app, then download it again. See below for more info.

[10/2/16] I've noticed a bug in the app. If you have CC (closed captions) turned on, the video locks up when it cuts to the commercials.

Luckily you can turn off CC while the commercials are stuck. Once you turn off CC, the video resumes and the commercials play. This happens on both my Fire TV (first generation) and Fire TV Stick. Hopefully this will get fixed in the next bug release.

Also the product feature description "easy access to CW Seed" is inaccurate since the CW Seed app currently doesn't support the Fire TV. That feature pertains only to the Fire tablet version of the app.

I give The CW five stars for giving unrestricted access to their shows. But I'll knock off a star until the CC bug is fixed.

[11/17/16 update] I was excited to see that an update was released on 11/16/16 and on the first show I tried, it played through the commercials without stopping. However it got stuck at the last commercial just before the end and I had to turn off CC for the video to resume. I had less success on subsequent shows as they got stuck on the commercials just like before.

I notice that the update is version 1.0.2 and the description says "Fixes an issue where Closed Captioning caused videos to freeze during ads". However when I checked the version number of the app on my Fire TV (settings, applications, managed installed applications), it is still version 1.0.1. So maybe that's the problem. But that's odd, because normally you get a notification that an update is available with an option to install it.

I think I could possibly get version 1.02 by uninstalling and reinstalling the app. But then I think I'd lose the progress bar status on the shows that I've been watching and I've gotten used to turning off CC at the commercials by now. Maybe I'll try reinstalling the app on my Fire TV Stick later.

[11/18/16 update] OK, I connected my Fire TV Stick. Checking The CW version, it was still on version 1.0.0. When I went to apps, there was an option to update it. After the update completed, I checked the version again and it was now 1.0.2.

Back to my Fire TV. Went to Apps, then to The CW. There was no option to update. Don't know why it would be different between the Fire TV and the Fire TV Stick. I think I'm going to uninstall and reinstall, but first I'm going to check where my progress status is on the shows that I watch.

[11/21/16 update] Decided to uninstall the app, then download it again. When I checked, sure enough the version was upgraded to 1.0.2. With the update, videos no longer pause at the commercials with CC on. You can tell if you have the new version when you toggle CC on/off. A menu now pops up allowing you to change Closed Captions to None or to English. If you don't get this menu, you're still on the old version.

Now waiting for them to finish the CW Seed app. I find it odd that after shows are finished playing, that CW Seed shows appear in the "You may also like" section. Unfortunately, you're not able to select other CW Seed shows because there's currently no CW Seed app for the Fire TV.
