Weekend road closures are returning as the pavement improvement project continues, the Arizona Department of Transportation announced, after two weeks without closures in the Valley

North Valley drivers can expect restrictions on Interstate 17 and road closures, and drivers in metro Phoenix can anticipate a closure on Loop 101 in the East Valley during the weekend of July 13-14.

Officials advised travelers to plan for delays and merging traffic while in these areas.

Here's what to know about the freeways that will be closed and how to avoid the traffic.

I-17 closed at Jomax Road

As construction work continues with the pavement improvement project, southbound I-17 will be closed at Jomax Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

Detours around the closure will be available using the Jomax Road off- and on-ramps.

Southbound I-17 will also be narrowed to one lane between Loop 303 and Jomax Road. Eastbound and westbound Jomax Road will be closed at I-17.

ADOT advised drivers to avoid using streets east of I-17 that are designed for local traffic as detours.

Loop 101 closed in East Valley

Northbound Loop 101 will be closed between Loop 202 in Chandler and U.S. 60 in Tempe from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. for the pavement improvement project.

Drivers can use the westbound I-10 and eastbound U.S. 60 as an alternate route to reach northbound Loop 101.
