I am listening to them on the audio version (which is the real improvement for me), and I was struck by the same, especially when we are reminded in the new introduction of just how many letters are cut. Part of my disappointment is that the selection focuses so much on The Hobbit and LotR, when I am more interested in the character and psychology and interests and friends of Tolkien.

@Joel - I shall probably listen to the audio version in a year or so (if we are spared) - to try and reinforce my learning!
