You've succeeded in piquing my interest!

That's a good observation about Wilson rejecting Christianity because he regarded it as a fixed doctrine. This is prevalent among Catholics. Catholics who come to the realization that they cannot follow the doctrines of the Church often abandon it. Some go to other denominations; some drop Christianity altogether. I almost did the same - the only thing that saved me from rejecting Christianity outright was the personal input you refer to in this post. I still find it amazing that Wilson never found his way back to the faith.

Selected book reviews by my mother: of which authors/book did she say ...?

(i) "You must try her though I don't suppose you'll like her."

(ii) On handing over a paperback: "I'll bet you can't finish it!"

@Frank - Wilson was never A Roman Catholic in practice, but seriously considered entering a monastery (Benedictine, I think) in the middle 1950s - at least as an ideal, and was somewhat near to converting at the time he wrote Religion and the Rebel. In other words, it was the Roman Catholic type of Christianity that most appealed to him.
