You write that "the Christian Hell is a choice" Indeed it is a choice as is Heaven as you also point out. That choice is made during our lives by the way we live our lives.
It is summed up in the wrods of John Donne which I included in my recent post about old age:
"Since I am coming to that holy room,
Where, with thy choir of saints for evermore,
I shall be made thy music; as I come
I tune the instrument here at the door,
And what I must do then, think here before."

As I hope I made clear in that post, death is most certainly not the end; it is, as you rightly say, a transition. What that transition might be is open to speculation according to different religious traditions around the world.

But we must make the transition joyfully 'in the sure and certain knowledge' etc. I use the word 'knowledge' instead of the usual word 'hope' which implies doubt and a joyful transition was why I did this music post -
