NFL card collectors are always searching for their next holy grail. One lucky investor may have just found it, thanks to their latest purchase of what’s being described as the “most iconic autographed Patrick Mahomes rookie card ever made by Panini.
Keep in mind, this was when Panini was the only brand with access to NFL licensing. Now that honor belongs to Fanatics. Yet, back when Mahomes was a rookie in 2017, Panini held exclusive rights. This means you’ll never find another company that produced a Mahomes rookie card other than Panini.
Some versions of the Mahomes rookie card are extremely rare since only so many copies were produced. That’s part of what makes this 2017 Panini National Treasures Rookie Patch Autograph so special. Only 10 cards were produced; this one is numbered 8/10, with a Beckett grade of 9/10. However, the autograph was deemed immaculate, receiving a perfect 10/10 grade.
The card was held by popular card auction company, Goldin, who recently sold the rare piece of Mahomes memorabilia for a whopping $173,240. Prospective buyers made a total of 24 bids before the Mahomes card sold for a winning bid of $142,000. The extra 30K or so accounts for the additional seller’s fee from Goldin.
While selling for nearly $200K is asinine, it’s far from the most expensive Mahomes card ever sold.
Back in 2021, a very similar version sold for $4.3 million. So what was the difference? Notably, the more expensive version only received an 8.5/10 grade, but it was also a 1-of-1, meaning there are no other cards in existence.
The buyer belongs to LJ’s Card Shop in New Albany, Ohio, who felt “honored” to add the card to their collection. Keep in mind, this purchase was made one year after Mahomes won his first Super Bowl, he’s since added two more, so we have a feeling the value of their prized purchase has only since increased.
