19 Ex-Child Stars Who Lost Their Fortune

It’s not easy growing up in the public eye and for many, it doesn’t always lead to an easier life.

Child stars have it rough but given that we often hear about professional and financial struggles in their later years, encountering fame at a young age can often appear to be more of a curse than a blessing.

These 23 child stars have shared their unfortunate stories of losing their fortune.

    1. Aaron Carter claimed that he made over $200 million before the age of 18.

In 2013, Aaron Carter filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy after owing $4 million in tax liens by the time he was 18. Speaking to Oprah on Oprah: Where Are They Now - Extra, he said that his parents were largely at fault for mismanaging his funds. What's worse, he said he only received $2 million by the time he reached a legal age, though he claimed he was owed $20 million under Coogan’s Law. Carter died on November 5, 2022.

    2. Lindsay Lohan reportedly earned upwards of $28 million at the height of her movie career.

Romano’s story is a cautionary tale of the importance of financial literacy for young people. In a YouTube video titled “How I Lost All My Money,” the former Disney child star explained how she entered the industry at 16 without any knowledge of how to manage her finances, similar to most kids that age. Her mother and manager at the time convinced her that she’d have plenty of work down the line, which hardly ever is the case with child stars. Romano went on to blow her cash on “big ticket items” including a Mercedes Benz G-Wagon and a psychic who “got a lot of money” from her. By the time she was 21, she cut ties with her family due to how her money was managed.

    4. Jaimee Foxworth’s role on Family Matters basically vanished without explanation. She played Judy Winslow, the youngest of the three Winslows. However, once the writers introduced Steve Urkel, Judy Winslow was written out completely and nobody really acknowledged her absence.

Since her struggles, Foxworth has been living a more peaceful life with her family.

    5. While Cole and Dylan Sprouse became icons as the main characters on The Suite Life Of Zack And Cody, the circumstances surrounding their entry into showbiz were much more dire.

Cole and Dylan Sprouse have established themselves as much more than child stars but the transition period from Disney characters to respectable actors wasn’t one without hurdles. Cole previously revealed that his parents pushed them into acting before they turned one. “My brother and I were put into acting when we were 8 months old by our mother because we needed money,” he said in a since-deleted audio clip on Tumblr. He elaborated further during an appearance on Call Me Daddy where he stated that his mother was financially irresponsible, resulting in a court stripping her of custody. “When my father was given forced custody, we had pretty much lost everything from the youngest parts of our career. That would be Friends and Big Daddy,” he said. “My mother was an incredibly wonderful and artistic woman, but she was financially the most irresponsible woman ever.”

    6. Dustin Diamond is best known as Screech from Saved By The Bell but his success was unfortunately limited to the '90s teen sitcom.
