"I can’t deal with ‘perfect’ characters. She's a poor millworker who’s befriended by the philanthropist heroine, and she’s dying at some stupidly young age because of ‘fluff’ on her lungs from the cotton. And she’s just insanely saintly about the whole thing. Like get mad, woman! It was such a middle class ‘they’re so magnanimous about their lot in life!’ bullshit example of a working class woman at the time. Anyhoo, when they made it into a series they cast Anna Maxwell Martin who is an awesome actor and actually (somehow!) made me like the character, thank God, so I could concentrate on the romance bits without wanting to throw my shoe at the screen."

"In the film she's mildly irritating, in the book she's selfish, entitled and uses her son to get whatever she wants and hides behind him when anyone calls her out. Instances included trying to claim Lou's bedroom because it's bigger, then when Lou refuses, she throws a huge temper tantrum and tries to make the parents give her their room. She demands other family members get second jobs to make ends meet but she can 'only work part time' because of her son... The list goes on."

Everybody in the book fell over themselves to rave about how nice and sweet and pure this child was and I just spent the entire time hoping he'd have a tantrum to make him even a little bit realistic. One of the few books I abandoned halfway through because the fawning got so obnoxious, and in the end, I only finished it out of spite."
