Miley Cyrus was just 13 years old when she was catapulted to global fame after landing the titular role in the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana, with the star going on to achieve a hugely successful music career as an adult.
Just this year, Miley won two Grammy awards, collaborated with Beyoncé on her highly-anticipated country album Cowboy Carter, and is set to be honored at this year’s Disney Legends Awards for the way she “pushed the envelope of creativity, challenged conventional wisdom, and broken the restraints of the status quo.”
At just 31 years old, Miley is celebrating almost two decades in showbiz, but in a new interview with W magazine, she made it clear that she doesn’t feel threatened by her industry peers or up-and-coming artists.
In fact, Miley has won high praise for her seriously refreshing approach to her “competition” in general, with the star admitting that she isn’t interested in seeing other musicians as her “opponents.”
“Something I wanted to talk about with you is celebration versus competition,” she told the publication. “Because competition is really of no interest to me.”
“I don’t think of other artists as opponents,” Miley continued. “Artists are not the same as athletes, playing a zero-sum game and keeping a score. There isn’t a score in art.”
And in a culture where fans are constantly pitting their faves against one another, and established stars have been called out for their eyebrow-raising chart-boosting tactics, many admitted to being impressed by Miley’s approach to the whole thing.
Elsewhere in the same interview, Miley recalled how hard she worked throughout her childhood as a Disney star — admitting that she wasn't able to spend time with friends or take part in any teenage rites of passage.
