Player Outlook
In 58 games from June 11 through the end of the season, Rece Hinds slashed .324/.398/.671 with 18 home runs, 11 steals and a 25.1 percent strikeout rate as a 22-year-old at Double-A. The pre-tacked balls were removed from the Southern League mid-season, so that aided his improved play after he notched a 41.9 percent strikeout rate in the first 50 games. A former third baseman, Hinds has a huge arm in right field and moves well for his size (6-foot-4, 215 pounds). The Reds added him to the 40-man roster as Rule 5 draft protection, and it's easy to fixate on his 70-grade raw power in Great American Ball Park. First, he'll need to prove that this newfound ability to make contact at an acceptable clip is sustainable as he moves up to Triple-A. The risk is obvious, but Hinds' 40-homer upside and proximity to the majors are appealing in all dynasty formats.

  • Reds' Rece Hinds: Sent back to minors

The Reds optioned Hinds to Triple-A Louisville on Friday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Hinds made headlines when he homered five times in his first six major-league games, but he went just 1-for-16 with a 5:0 K:BB in four contests since then and had started only one of the last three games. The 23-year-old is clearing out to make room on the roster for the return of TJ Friedl from the injured list.

  • Reds' Rece Hinds: Losing playing time

Hinds is out of the lineup for Monday's game against Atlanta. Since opening his big-league career earlier this month with nine extra-base hits and two stolen bases in his first six games, Hinds' sizzling bat has cooled off. In his subsequent three starts, he has gone 1-for-12 with three strikeouts, and the downturn in performance may have already cost him an everyday role. While Hinds should still have a regular spot in the lineup versus lefties while he's up with the big club, he'll take a seat against a right-hander (Reynaldo Lopez) for the second day in a row. Will Benson, Stuart Fairchild and Jake Fraley looks to be the Reds' preferred outfield configuration versus righties at the moment.

  • Reds' Rece Hinds: Heading to bench for series finale

Hinds is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals. After opening his big-league career earlier this month by going 11-for-22 with eight extra-base hits (five home runs, two doubles and one triple) to go with two stolen bases in his first six games, Hinds has predictably cooled down. He went 0-for-4 in the Reds' final contest before the All-Star break and has opened the second half by going 1-for-8 with three strikeouts in the Reds' first two games in Washington. Hinds' hot start will likely give him at least a little more leash in a near-everyday role, but his playing time could drop quickly if the contact issues that were present at each of his stops in the minors begin to crop up more frequently in the majors.

  • Reds' Rece Hinds: Stays hot with grand slam

Hinds went 1-for-3 with a grand slam, a walk and an additional run scored in Friday's 7-4 win over the Marlins. Hinds continued an incredible start to his career, taking Yonny Chirinos deep in the third inning to extend Cincinnati's lead to 7-0. The 23-year-old Hinds is now 9-for-19 with three homers, eight RBI, four runs scored and two stolen bases. While his current pace at the plate certainly isn't sustainable, Hinds has earned a regular role with Stuart Fairchild (back), TJ Friedl (hamstring) and Nick Martini (thumb) all on the IL.

  • Reds' Rece Hinds: Goes deep in debut

Hinds went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a double in Monday's win over the Rockies. Hinds was promoted from Triple-A Louisville for his MLB debut Monday and wasted no time making an impact. He doubled in the fifth inning for his first career hit before belting a 449-foot homer in the eighth. The 23-year-old produced a .698 OPS in 328 Triple-A plate appearances prior to his promotion.

  • Reds' Rece Hinds: Joins big-league roster

The Reds recalled Hinds from Triple-A Louisville on Monday. He'll start in right field and bat eighth in the Reds' series opener versus the Rockies. Hinds will reach the big leagues for the first time after he slashed .216/.290/.409 in 77 contests this season with Louisville. The 23-year-old has hit 13 home runs and stolen 12 bases in 2024, but he's struck out at an unsightly 38.4 percent clip. Hinds will provide depth for a banged-up Reds outfield and will enter the starting nine right away, but he may just be a placeholder on the 26-man active roster until the newly acquired Austin Slater joins the club Tuesday.

  • Reds' Rece Hinds: Active at Double-A

Hinds (undisclosed) was activated from the 7-day injured list Tuesday for Double-A Chattanooga. The Lookouts only have a couple games left this season, but at least Hinds' injury was minor and only cost him 10 days. Hinds was a strikeout machine earlier in the year (42.7 K% in first 49 games), but he is slashing .323/.396/.668 with 18 home runs, 11 steals and an acceptable 24.7 percent strikeout rate over his last 220 at-bats. Given that the Southern League switched out the pre-tacked baseballs in early-July, it would seem that this recent run from Hinds is a more relevant dataset than his early season mediocrity. The former third baseman primarily played right field this year while also seeing time in left field and at designated hitter. He will need to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason if the Reds want to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.

  • Reds' Rece Hinds: Back in action for High-A club

High-A Dayton reinstated Hinds (hand) from its 60-day injured list Tuesday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The power-hitting Hinds will rejoin the Dayton lineup for the first time since June 21 after a two-month absence due to a hamate bone fracture in his left hand. Hinds received the green light to head to Dayton after going 1-for-16 with two stolen bases during a recent six-game rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League.

  • Reds' Rece Hinds: Suffers left hamate fracture

Hinds was placed on the 7-day minor-league injured list with a left hamate fracture Thursday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Hinds has struggled with strikeouts in the minors early in the season, as he's posted a 40 percent strikeout rate over 53 games at High-A Dayton. The 21-year-old played in Tuesday's game in Dayton but apparently sustained a hand injury that will require an IL stint. The team hasn't yet revealed a timetable for Hinds' return, but he'll presumably be forced to miss several weeks since he's dealing with a fracture.

  • Reds' Rece Hinds: Prodigious strikeout rate

Hinds is hitting .265/.363/.487 with six homers and five stolen bases at High-A Dayton, but he has also struck out 53 times in 135 plate appearances, good for a 39.3% K%. Hinds missed significant time due to injury both in 2019 and 2021, so it's premature to rule out eventual improvement. But his inability to make regular contact is a red flag, despite his clear power.

  • Reds' Rece Hinds: Rejoins Low-A lineup

Hinds (knee) was reinstated from Low-A Daytona's 7-day injured list Tuesday and went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in his return to the lineup. Daytona activated Hinds for his first appearance with the affiliate since June 2 after he completed an 11-game rehab assignment in the rookie-level Florida Complex League. The 20-year-old third baseman has appeared in 23 games for Daytona on the season, hitting .218 with four home runs and two stolen bases.

  • Reds' Rece Hinds: On shelf with torn meniscus

Hinds is on the 7-day injured list at Low-A Daytona with a torn meniscus in his left knee, Doug Gray of RedsMinorLeagues.com reports. The recovery time for such an injury is typically four-to-six weeks after surgery. Hinds last played June 2, so he could return in late July or early August. A popular breakout candidate this year, Hinds was hitting .229/.319/.458 with four home runs, two steals and a 25.5 percent strikeout rate as a 20-year-old. A pitcher-friendly home park in Daytona has suppressed his numbers.

  • Reds' Rece Hinds: Joins player pool

Hinds was added to Cincinnati's 60-man player pool Friday. Hinds was selected 49th overall by the Reds in the 2019 draft, but he played in only three games at rookie ball last year due to a quad injury. The 19-year-old will head to the alternate site to hopefully avoid a lost season of development.
