  • Red Sox's Nick Sogard: Steals first career base

Sogard went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base in Friday's 8-4 loss to the Astros.

Sogard was active on the basepaths all night, reaching three times and scoring twice. He was a pest in the fourth inning, stealing his first career base and then scoring on an errant pickoff attempt. The 26-year-old has reached base in each of his first seven major-league games with two multi-hit efforts and seven runs scored.

  • Red Sox's Josh Winckowski: Starting Saturday

Winckowski will start Saturday's game against the Astros, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

With Cooper Criswell (COVID-19) unavailable for what was supposed to be his start Saturday, Winckowski will now start for the first time since July 6. In nine appearances since moving to the bullpen, the 26-year-old right-hander has allowed five earned runs in 10.2 innings while striking out five batters and walking six.

  • Red Sox's Tanner Houck: Logs quality start in no-decision

Houck did not factor into the decision in Friday's 8-4 loss to the Astros, allowing one run on four hits and three walks with one strikeout over six innings.

Houck allowed a run in the first inning but rebounded for five scoreless frames before departing with a 3-1 lead that the bullpen couldn't preserve. He generated only two swinging strikes on 82 pitches but also limited the Astros to four hard-hit balls. The 28-year-old's command remains worth monitoring, as he has posted a 19:19 K:BB in six starts between July and August. On the year, he owns a 3.02 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 124:38 K:BB across 140 innings and lines up to face the Orioles next week.

  • Red Sox's Lucas Giolito: Throwing in outfield

Giolito (elbow) was throwing in the field at Fenway Park on Friday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Giolito joined the Red Sox in the offseason to be part of Boston's starting rotation. However, he never had the chance to suit up in the regular season after suffering a partial UCL tear and flexor strain in his right elbow during spring training, which required an internal brace procedure in March and a trip to the 60-day injured list. That type of procedure carries a 10-to-12 month recovery window, so the fact that Giolito is throwing just five months after surgery shows how well the 30-year-old is progressing in his rehab. Barring any setbacks, Giolito could begin throwing off the mound before the end of the season.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Return date up to him

Red Sox manager Alex Cora indicated Friday that Casas (ribs) will be activated from the 60-day injured list whenever the first baseman feels his timing at the plate is ready, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Casas is 8-for-25 with five doubles and a 7:2 K:BB over six rehab games with Triple-A Worcester. It sounds like the team is no longer concerned about whether Casas is ready physically and now it's just about knocking a little more rust off. While the news is relatively vague in terms of a potential timetable, it would appear Casas could be back any day now. He's been sidelined since late April with a cartilage tear in his left ribcage.

  • Red Sox's Bryan Mata: Begins throwing

Mata (elbow/lat) played catch Friday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Mata was returned from his rehab assignment July 19 due to elbow inflammation and was shut down from throwing temporarily. While he's resumed a throwing program, Mata still appears to be multiple weeks away from returning.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: On COVID IL

The Red Sox placed Criswell on the COVID-19 injured list Friday, retroactive to August 8.

Criswell will be sidelined for at least seven days due to the sickness. He was slated to start Saturday's game against the Astros, but the Red Sox will now have to look elsewhere and could turn the contest into a bullpen game. Since moving the the bullpen July 28, Criswell has made four appearances, allowing three runs over 6.2 innings. Brad Keller was recalled from Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move.

  • Red Sox's Brad Keller: Returns to majors

The Red Sox recalled Keller from Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Keller has allowed 10 runs over 16.2 frames during his time in Boston this season. He would seem to be a good bet to eat up some innings Saturday versus the Astros in what could be a bullpen game for the Red Sox.

  • Red Sox's Cam Booser: Recalled from Triple-A

The Red Sox recalled Booser from Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Booser was just sent down Wednesday but is back to take the roster spot of Brayan Bello, who went on paternity leave. The lefty reliever holds a 2.77 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 38 appearances with the Red Sox this season.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: On paternity list, won't miss start

The Red Sox placed Bello on the paternity list Friday, but Bello will return in time for his scheduled start Monday against Texas, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Bello will spend his weekend away from the team for personal reasons, but the expectation is he'll be back for Monday's start. In his last six outings, Bello has a 2-0 record, though he's logged a 5.08 ERA with 38 strikeouts over 33.2 innings. Cam Booser will temporarily join the 26-man roster and supply the bullpen with an additional arm.

  • Red Sox's Trevor Story: Taking batting practice Monday

Story (shoulder) will take batting practice on the field Monday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Story underwent surgery for a fractured left shoulder in mid-April and the feeling at the time was that it was likely to end his 2024 campaign. However, the shortstop's rehab has come along more quickly than expected and Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Friday that he's "truly believing" Story will make it back before the end of the season. There are still many hoops for Story to jump through, of course, and there is no timetable for his return, but it's an exciting development for the Red Sox.

  • Red Sox's Yoeilin Cespedes: Done for season

Cespedes recently underwent surgery to repair a hamate bone fracture in his left hand and will miss the rest of the season, Chris Hatfield of SoxProspects.com reports.

Cespedes had been expected to make his full-season debut with Single-A Salem in late June, but he suffered the hamate bone fracture while playing in the rookie-level Florida Complex League. The outfielder should be back to full health for the start of spring training.

  • Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Activated, optioned to Triple-A

The Red Sox reinstated Grissom (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Worcester, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.

Grissom has taken a massive step back at the plate in the big leagues this year, slashing just .148/.207/.160 with three RBI in 87 plate appearances. He's begun to rediscover his swing while on a rehab assignment with Worcester, tallying a hit in nine of his last 10 games, but the Red Sox will keep him stashed away in the minors now that he's fully recovered from his right hamstring strain.

  • Red Sox's Danny Jansen: Homers in loss

Jansen went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 8-4 loss to the Royals.

Jansen has gone 6-for-14 over four contests since he was acquired via trade from the Blue Jays. The catcher has settled into a backup role behind Connor Wong, though Wong can also play first base to give Jansen a path to some at-bats. For the year, Jansen is hitting .226 with a .702 OPS, seven homers, 20 RBI, 28 runs scored, 13 doubles and no stolen bases over 65 games.

  • Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Blasts three-run homer

Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in Wednesday's 8-4 loss to the Royals.

Gonzalez's blast put the Red Sox ahead 3-2 in the third inning. The backup infielder has gone 4-for-11 with three homers and seven RBI over his last five contests, but that's a span that dates back to July 29. For the season, he's at a .284/.336/.477 slash line with four homers, 17 RBI, 13 runs scored and seven stolen bases through 120 plate appearances. Gonzalez is likely to remain as a right-handed-hitting platoon option at a number of positions, primarily second base.

  • Red Sox's Kutter Crawford: Yields six runs

Crawford (7-9) allowed six runs on five hits and four walks while striking out three over 3.2 innings to take the loss versus the Royals on Wednesday.

The only positive from Wednesday's start was that Crawford allowed just one home run after giving up at least three long balls in each of his three previous starts. The right-hander has allowed 22 runs over 18.2 innings since the All-Star break, and the four walks he issued Wednesday matched his season high. The slump has raised his ERA from 3.04 to 4.11, and he's at a 1.13 WHIP and 125:34 K:BB through 131.1 innings over 23 starts this season. Crawford's next start is projected to be at home versus the Rangers.

  • Red Sox's Nick Sogard: Getting third straight start

Sogard will start at shortstop and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Royals.

Sogard will pick up his third consecutive start, this time facing off against a lefty (Cole Ragans) after his prior two starts came versus right-handed pitching. Tyler O'Neill missed both of those two matchups against righties and had been viewed as day-to-day until he was placed on the injured list Wednesday with an infection in his left lower leg. With O'Neill now in line for at least a week-long absence, Sogard could have an opportunity to see continued reps versus righties after opening his big-league career with five hits and two walks through his first 18 plate appearances. However, the Red Sox brought back the left-handed-hitting Enmanuel Valdez from Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move Wednesday, and he could challenge Sogard for O'Neill's vacant spot in the lineup versus righties.
