  • Bills' Kaiir Elam: Larger role likely

Elam is coming off a strong training camp as Buffalo gets ready for its preseason opener against the Bears on Saturday, Maddy Glab of the Bills' official site reports. Veteran teammate Dion Dawkins said this week, "I'm happy that '5' is doing what he does now, and he can show us why he's a first-round pick ... when he gets in a game, Kaiir does what he does, and he's in practice and he's showing it. I'm just happy that Kaiir is feeling more like his self."

Rasul Douglas and Christian Benford are the two carryover starters from last season at the corner spots, while hybrid player Taron Johnson is probably the best secondary player left on the team, so Elam becoming a starter is far from a certainty. However, the Bills run a defense in which several corners see the field with regularity, and Elam -- the team's 2022 first-round pick who hasn't really panned out yet, partly due to injuries -- looks to be in that mix after making some big strides this offseason.

  • Bills' Chase Claypool: Toe injury lingers

Claypool is still being evaluated for a toe injury, Alec White of the Bills' official site reports.

Claypool has now missed over a week of practices, and his status for Saturday's preseason opener against the Bears is in question. The Bills signed the 2020 second-rounder this offseason as a high-upside dart to fill out their receiving room, but right now Claypool is no certainty to even make the Week 1 roster, which is in a huge state of flux after a top three of Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman and Curtis Samuel.

  • Bills' Mack Hollins: Misses practice with leg injury

Hollins (leg) is not practicing Thursday, NFL.com reports.

The severity of Hollins' injury remains undisclosed, but it could well impact his availability for Saturday's preseason matchup against the Bears. Coach Sean McDermott has stated that Josh Allen and the starting offense will get some action Saturday, so sitting out would be a notable opportunity missed for Hollins. The big-bodied journeyman is competing with Marquez Valdes-Scantling, KJ Hamler and Chase Claypool (toe) for a depth role in Buffalo's wide receiver room.

  • Bills' James Cook: Likely playing Saturday

Cook and other starters likely will play about a quarter in Saturday's preseason game against Chicago, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports.

Coach Sean McDermott didn't mention Cook by name, but the running back will likely be out there if Josh Allen is. McDermott confirmed that Allen is scheduled to start, leading an offense in which the top skill-position weapons figure to be Cook, TE Dalton Kincaid and WRs Curtis Samuel, Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman. A relative lack of experience in the pass-catching corps could lead to the running backs being more emphasized, but there's some chance that benefits rookie Ray Davis and/or Ty Johnson rather than giving Cook a big uptick from last year's regular-season totals of 634 snaps (54.5 percent), 237 carries and 44 receptions.

  • Bills' Josh Allen: Scheduled to play Saturday

Allen and other starters are scheduled to play for about a quarter in Saturday's preseason game against Chicago, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports.

It'll be Allen's first chance in game setting to connect with new wide receivers Curtis Samuel and Keon Coleman, who join familiar faces Khalil Shakir and TE Dalton Kincaid as the probable top pass catchers under offensive coordinator Joe Brady. The Bills shifted toward more focus on the running game after Brady took over last November, but it worked out more than fine for Allen in fantasy because he got even more carries near the goal line than usual and scored eight rushing TDs in a five-game stretch Weeks 12-17. Combining his passing and rushing scores, Allen finished with 42-45 TDs each of the past four regular seasons.
