Top Lions News

  • Lions' Connor Galvin: Out for season

Galvin suffered a torn MCL in Thursday's preseason loss against the Giants and will require season-ending surgery, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.

The second-year offensive tackle was carted off into the locker room during Detroit's preseason opener. He'll now have to focus on next season after making one appearance for the Lions last season with seven special-teams snaps.

  • Lions' Sam LaPorta: Sits out preseason opener

LaPorta (hamstring) didn't see action in Thursday's preseason opener against the Giants, the Detroit News reports.

The Lions opted not to play their key skill players in the contest, but LaPorta has been dealing with a hamstring injury, so he probably wouldn't have played Thursday even if they had. The star tight end's next chance to see game action is Aug. 17 against the Chiefs, but he'll need to get some practice time in before then for that to occur.

  • Lions' Craig Reynolds: Competing for No. 3 role

Reynolds had four carries for 11 yards in Thursday's 14-3 loss to the Giants.

Reynolds enters the 2024 campaign in a battle for the No. 3 running back role behind David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, competing with rookie Sione Vaki for that spot. Vaki turned four carries into 29 yards versus New York, including a 15-yard scamper in the second quarter. It's hard to read too much into usage in the preseason, but Reynolds saw nine offensive snaps while Vaki was on the field for 13. Reynolds appeared in all 17 regular-season games with Detroit in 2023 and likely still has the edge to open the season above Vaki on the depth chart.

  • Lions' Jake Bates: Hits field goal in preseason opener

Bates made his only field-goal attempt in Thursday's 14-3 loss to the Giants.

Bates was able to capitalize on his only opportunity Thursday, nailing a 53-yard field goal to give the Lions an early 3-0 lead. The 25-year-old signed with Detroit in June, and he appears to be the featured kicker with the team in 2024 after expected starter Michael Badgley (hamstring) suffered a season-ending injury.

  • Lions' Connor Galvin: Injures knee Thursday

Galvin suffered a knee injury in Thursday night's preseason loss to the Giants, Justin Rogers of DetroitFootball.net reports.

Galvin was rolled up on and eventually carted to the locker room. Rogers suspects it's a likely long-term injury for the backup tackle. Galvin made one appearance for the Lions last season, playing seven special-teams snaps.

  • Lions' David Bada: Suffers Achilles injury

Bada suffered an Achilles injury in Thursday night's preseason loss to the Giants, Justin Rogers of DetroitFootball.net reports.

Bada couldn't put any weight on his leg after the injury, and Rogers suspects it's a long-term issue. Bada appeared in two games for the Commanders in 2022 before spending all of last season on injured reserve with an arm injury. He signed with the Lions last month and was trying to compete for a roster spot.

  • Lions' James Houston: Dealing with bone bruise in knee

Houston suffered a bone bruise in his knee during Thursday night's preseason loss to the Giants, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.

Coming off a mostly lost 2023 season that saw him appear in just two regular-season games due to a broken ankle, Houston was itching to hit someone Thursday and landed a big lick on Drew Lock in the first half. Houston was later injured, but the timetable for his return is unclear. Houston recorded eight sacks in seven games as a 2022 rookie, and the Lions are banking on him providing some pass-rush juice alongside Aidan Hutchinson this season.

  • Lions' Antoine Green: Suffers concussion Thursday

Green suffered a concussion in Thursday night's preseason loss to the Giants, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.

Green was injured on a block attempt in the second quarter. Prior to leaving, Green had reeled in all three of his targets for 13 yards. A seventh-round pick out of North Carolina last year, Green is trying to win a job behind Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams in Detroit's wide-open wideout group.

  • Lions' Sione Vaki: Gets four carries in NFL debut

Vaki rushed four times for 29 yards and wasn't targeted in Thursday's 14-3 preseason loss to the Giants. He also recovered a fumble.

All four of Vaki's carries came on one drive late in the first half, and he also showed good awareness for a rookie by recovering a fumble committed by a Giants defender on an interception return. The versatile fourth-round pick played both safety and running back at Utah, but the Lions have had Vaki concentrate on the latter position to begin his NFL career. He appears to be no higher than fourth on the depth chart behind Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery and Craig Reynolds, who started Thursday's game. Detroit's second preseason game will be next Saturday in Kansas City.

  • Lions' Nate Sudfeld: Struggles in preseason start

Sudfeld completed 13 of 24 passes for 96 yards with one interception in Thursday's 14-3 preseason loss to the Giants. He added three rushing attempts for 14 yards.

Sudfeld got the start in the preseason opener but didn't lead Detroit's offense to a first down until the second quarter. Hendon Hooker subbed in after halftime but played only two drives before leaving the game due to a concussion. While Sudfeld's performance wasn't very encouraging, he appears to be the frontrunner for the second spot on Detroit's quarterback depth chart behind Jared Goff. With Hooker in concussion protocol, the Lions may add more competition to the quarterback room before their second preseason game in Kansas City next Saturday.

  • Lions' Hendon Hooker: Suffers concussion Thursday

Hooker suffered a concussion during Thursday's 14-3 preseason loss to the Giants, per coach Dan Campbell, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.

Hooker played the first two drives of the second half, completing five of nine passes for 36 yards and adding four rushing attempts for 34 yards before heading to the medical tent to be evaluated for a concussion. Those tests revealed a concussion, which will likely keep Hooker from suiting up in Detroit's next preseason game against the Chiefs next Saturday. Nate Sudfeld started Thursday's game, suggesting that Sudfeld is currently ahead of Hooker in the competition to back up Jared Goff. While Sudfeld struggled Thursday, Hooker will be unable to make up ground until he clears the NFL's concussion protocol.

  • Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs: Not in line to suit up Thursday

Gibbs isn't suited up ahead of Thursday's preseason game at the Giants, Justin Rogers of DetroitFootball.net reports.

Both Gibbs and David Montgomery will be in street clothes for the Lions' exhibition opener, which will leave Craig Reynolds, Sione Vaki, Zonovan Knight, Jermar Jefferson and Jake Funk to work out of the backfield. Gibbs has been working all over the formation during training camp to date, potentially setting him up to easily surpass the 234 touches for 1,261 yards from scrimmage and 11 total touchdowns that he compiled in 15 regular-season contests as a rookie in 2023.

  • Lions' Amon-Ra St. Brown: Not in uniform Thursday

St. Brown isn't suited up ahead of Thursday's preseason contest at the Giants, Justin Rogers of DetroitFootball.net reports.

The same can be said for fellow wide receivers Jameson Williams and Kalif Raymond, meaning Donovan Peoples-Jones, Tre'Quan Smith and Tom Kennedy likely will be the first wide receivers to get on the field for the Lions in their exhibition opener. St. Brown himself signed a lucrative four-year extension back in the spring on the heels of back-to-back 100-catch campaigns and career highs in receiving yards (1,515) and touchdowns (10) over 16 regular-season games in 2023.
