  • Colts' Anthony Gould: Making push for WR duty

Gould has been used with the first-team offense in the slot at times during training camp and has made a strong impression, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.

The 2024 fifth-round draft pick was seen mostly as a candidate for special teams, as he's also competing for the punt-return job (he was an elite punt returner at Oregon State). However, it looks like he could be in the receiver mix, which may have openings for playing time if Josh Downs misses regular-season games with a high-ankle sprain.

  • Colts' Genard Avery: Dealing with upper leg injury

Avery missed practice Friday with an upper leg injury, the Indianapolis Star reports.

The 29-year-old missed all of last season after suffering a training camp knee injury that involved his LCL and meniscus, so any injury setback is a worry. He may miss Sunday's preseason game as a result.

  • Colts' Ashton Dulin: Dealing with hamstring issue

Dulin didn't practice Friday due to a hamstring injury, Kevin Bowen of 93.5 FM The Fan Indianapolis reports.

The severity of the injury isn't clear, but Dulin may not play in Sunday's preseason game against the Broncos as a result. Dulin suffered a season-ending torn ACL back in August 2023, but had returned to practice at full speed at the start of training camp.

  • Colts' Adonai Mitchell: Gets work as slot receiver

Mitchell worked in the slot with the first-team offense in Friday's practice with Josh Downs sidelined with a high-ankle sprain, Kevin Bowen of 92.5 FM The Fan Indianapolis reports.

Mitchell and Alex Pierce have been in competition for the No. 3 receiver role, but both could begin the campaign in three-receiver sets if Downs misses regular-season games. It's notable that Mitchell got work in the slot, as he had mostly been seen as a perimeter receiver and deep threat. The 2024 second-round draft pick could find an additional path to playing time as a result.

  • Colts' Will Mallory: Back at practice

Mallory (hamstring) was back practicing Friday, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.

Mallory's hamstring injury from the Colts' 2023 season has lingered over to preparation for this upcoming year, but he's now moving in the right direction with a return to practice. The capacity that the 6-foot-4 tight end was able to participate in Friday was not disclosed, which leaves his availability for Sunday's preseason game against Denver up in the air.

  • Colts' Wesley French: Recovering from ankle surgery

French underwent season-ending surgery on his ankle prior to being placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.

French had been poised to open the season as the top backup to starting center Ryan Kelly before succumbing to the injury. Indianapolis signed undrafted free agent Ryan Coll to replace French on the roster, though rookie fourth-round pick Tanor Bortolini and fifth-year lineman Danny Pinter are more likely candidates to step in as Kelly's backup.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Scheduled to play Sunday

Coach Shane Steichen said Friday that Richardson and most other starters will play "a series or two" in Sunday's preseason game against the Broncos, Larra Overton of Colts.com reports.

Steichen said one or two healthy starters may be held out, but he clarified that his starting quarterback wouldn't be one of them. Richardson thus figures to get some playing time, though perhaps not enough to make him a good option for preseason DFS contests.

  • Colts' Dayo Odeyingbo: Returns to practice

Odeyingbo (calf) returned to practice Wednesday, 93.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.

Odeyingbo is coming off the best season of his three-year career, finishing 2023 with 38 tackles (22 solo), including 8.0 sacks, two passes defended, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries across 17 regular-season games. Odeyingbo and Kwity Paye are locked in as the Colts' top pass rushers heading into 2024 after Samson Ebukam suffered a torn Achilles' tendon.

  • Colts' Wesley French: Lands on IR

The Colts placed French (lower leg) on injured reserve Wednesday.

French missed Wednesday's practice with a lower leg issue and has subsequently been placed on Indianapolis' IR.
