The granddaddy of all summertime shark stunts returns for its 36th installment starting tonight, with actor/wrestler John Cena serving as host for the fan-favorite summertime programming event, which will include 21 hours of new programming this year. Four of those new shows kick things off tonight: Belly of the Beast: Bigger and Bloodier, a follow-up to one of last year’s most popular Shark Week specials; Jaws vs. Leviathan; Makozilla; and Sydney Harbor Shark Invasion.

Alfred Hitchcock received his fifth and final Best Director Oscar nomination for this iconic 1960 thriller based on Robert Bloch’s novel and led by Anthony Perkins (who should have received a Best Actor nomination) in a fantastic performance as murderous mama’s boy Norman Bates alongside Best Supporting Actress nominee Janet Leigh as poor Marion Crane, who has the misfortune of stopping for a stay and a shower at the remote Bates Motel, managed by Norman. Despite pretty much everyone knowing the film’s twist at this point, it still has the ability to shock thanks to Hitchcock’s direction and the performances by the cast, which also includes Vera Miles, John Gavin and Martin Balsam.

Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Monday night remembrance of the Motion Picture Production Code (aka the Hays Code) that was instituted in Hollywood between 1934 and 1968 continues with more double features of various themes considered to be controversial during the era, contrasting one made before enforcement of the Code with another made when the Code was more fully in effect. The first pairing looks at two crime/gangster films: Scarface (1932), director Howard Hawks’ influential classic led by Paul Muni, which was banned in some cities and states even after alterations were made to make it not appear to be glorifying gangsters and violence as much as some censors thought it did, followed by The Roaring Twenties (1939), directed by Raoul Walsh and starring James Cagney, Priscilla Lane and Humphrey Bogart. After that are a couple of films dealing with illegitimate children: the pre-Code comedy/drama The Bachelor Father (1931), led by Marion Davies, followed by Bachelor Mother (1939), a romantic comedy starring Ginger Rogers and David Niven. Two melodramas conclude things early tomorrow: the pre-Code title The Sin of Nora Moran (1933), starring Zita Johann, and That Certain Woman (1937), led by Bette Davis, Henry Fonda and Anita Louise.

Turner Classic Movies continues to remember prolific and influential filmmaker Roger Corman, who passed away May 9 at age 98, with several more of the low-budget B-movie classics that Corman was behind. Up first are four of the famed adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe works directed by Corman and starring Vincent Price, the first three of which have screenplays by sci-fi/horror master Richard Matheson: House of Usher (1960), costarring Mark Damon; The Pit and the Pendulum (1961), also featuring British scream queen Barbara Steele; The Raven (1963), which teams Price with other creepy movie icons Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre, and also features Jack Nicholson, who got his early exposure in this and other Corman productions, in a supporting role; and The Masque of the Red Death (1964). The lineup concludes early tomorrow with two other Corman-directed films: Bloody Mama (1970), an exploitation crime film with Shelley Winters in the title role, along with supporting performances from Bruce Dern and Robert De Niro; and The Wild Angels (1966), which helped inspire the outlaw biker genre of the late ’60s/early ’70s and was the first film to associate star Peter Fonda with motorcycles well before his more famous role in 1969’s Easy Rider. TCM’s Corman celebration will conclude next Wednesday, July 17, with several movies he produced.

After the queen incites a coup against Auradon, Red and Cinderella’s (Brandy Norwood) daughter, Chloe (Malia Baker), travel back in time to undo the traumatic event that set Red’s mother down her villainous path. The music-driven film features seven new original songs, as well as reprises of the Descendants 2 hit “What’s My Name” and “So This Is Love” from Disney’s original Cinderella animated feature. Paul Newman leads this hilarious 1977 cult classic, which is one of the funniest sports comedies ever made and a rare film of any genre set in the world of ice hockey. The story surrounds a struggling minor league hockey team in a declining factory town that finds success and popularity when it adds outrageously violent goonery to its play. Much of that comes courtesy of the Hansons, three black-rimmed-glasses-wearing brothers brought on as “enforcers” and portrayed by former real-life hockey players David Hanson, and Steve and Jeff Carlson. Nancy Dowd wrote the screenplay, based on her brother Ned’s hockey-playing experiences, and the film was directed by George Roy Hill, who had previously directed Newman in the classics Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and The Sting (1973).

The family owns a hotel in Key Largo, and there Frank finds himself tangling with ruthless gangster Johnny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson) when the two of them and a few other visitors are trapped by a hurricane in the hotel. Lionel Barrymore and Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Claire Trevor also star.
