UPDATED:

Bonnie Somerville is joining the cast of “NYPD Blue” for the long-running cop show’s final season.

In what will be her first regular role in a drama series, she’ll play a new detective in the 15th Precinct. Somerville had a recurring part on “The O.C.” last season, but her previous TV work has mostly been in comedies.

Her character will replace Detective Connie McDowell on “Blue,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Charlotte Ross, who played McDowell for three-plus seasons, went on maternity leave last spring and apparently is not returning.

Somerville first gained notice on the short-lived WB series “Grosse Pointe,” where she played a naive actress in a “90210”-like teen soap opera.

Her movie credits include “Crime and Punishment in Suburbia” and the upcoming “Without a Paddle,” set for release in August.

“NYPD Blue” begins its 12th season on ABC on Sept. 21.
