Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) seeks a passionate and creative advocate to join our policy team and help us secure our democracy and build a better Washington. Responsibilities:
The Senior Policy Counsel/Senior Policy Advisor will play a key role in setting CREW’s policy agenda and will serve as a strategic thought leader to the Policy Director, President, Chief Counsel, and policy staff. This position will work collaboratively with the rest of the CREW team to work towards a more ethical, equitable, and accountable government.
- Policy Development: Work in conjunction with the Policy Director, President, Chief Counsel and policy team to develop CREW’s policy agenda and long-term policy strategy to change laws, rules, and enforcement to fight corruption, ensure accountability for ethical misconduct, and expose conflicts of interest. Educate the public and lawmakers about how corruption and ethical misconduct harms the foundations of our democracy and permits the consolidation of power into anti-democratic hands.
- Legislative Advocacy: Keep apprised of relevant legislation, committee activities, White House actions, and agency consideration. Work closely with congressional offices, executive branch staff, and agency personnel to encourage positive policy action and provide technical advice on legislation and oversight agendas.
- Writing and communications: Write reports, articles, OpEds, blog posts, hearing testimony, letters, and comments on rulemakings. Work with a communications team to coordinate media responses and web presence on policy issues.
- Monitoring legal developments: Track legal developments related to corruption, criminal conflicts of interest, and ethical misconduct of elected officials including criminal and civil court cases. Write reports, articles, and blog posts analyzing legal developments.
- Collaboration: Represent CREW in coalitions working to build an ethical and accountable government, fight corruption, and protect our democracy. Coordinate with CREW’s litigation, research, and communications teams to ensure a consistent policy message.
- Complaints and Litigation: As needed, assist with CREW’s filing of complaints with agencies and legislative committees and/or with civil lawsuits.
Qualifications:
- J.D. (preferred).
- A minimum of 7 years policy experience in non-profit, executive branch, Capitol Hill, or comparable setting
- Familiarity with and interest in political corruption, money in politics, democracy reform, and/or government transparency issues.
- Experience with efforts to fight corruption and advance democracy reform, including legislative and litigation strategies to reform our democratic institutions and ensure public accountability for efforts to undermine our democracy.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks.
- The ability to work collaboratively.
- Outstanding research and analytical skills.
- Great writing and communication skills.
- Initiative to identify needs, take charge of tasks, and get things done in an exciting, fast-paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and sound judgment, including the ability to work effectively with outside counsel.
- The position is based in Washington, D.C. but will be hybrid with employees splitting their time between working at home and working in the office.
Compensation/Benefits
The salary range for this position is $90,000-$150,000 based on experience and qualifications. The Digital Associate position is a unique opportunity to be on the front lines of the fight for a more ethical, equitable and accountable government, while working alongside smart, dedicated and kind people.
As a leading nonpartisan nonprofit government watchdog, CREW is dedicated to defending our democratic institutions, rooting out government corruption and fighting the influence of money in politics through legal action and communications grounded by in-depth research. CREW is looking for a Digital Associate who is quick on their feet, takes initiative, is committed to our mission and cares deeply about protecting our democracy. We welcome diverse skills and experiences.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing social media content from start to finish, including drafting, editing, running approvals, posting, and analyzing performance;
- Drafting and editing content for publication promoting CREW’s original legal, research and policy work to a large and diverse audience;
- Posting and editing content on CREW’s website, including serving as one of the primary point people for posting rapid-response content;
- Designing graphics for social media and the website;
- Assisting the Digital Director with the drafting, editing, coding and sending of grassroots emails;
- Brainstorming and designing new products for CREW’s merch store;
- Helping CREW grow new social media platforms like Threads and Bluesky; and
- Monitoring the news and keeping senior staff up-to-date with clips relevant to CREW’s mission.
Qualifications:
- 1 to 3+ years of communications experience, including internships, preferably in nonprofit, government, campaign or comparable setting;
- Experience with the creation and management of time-sensitive materials;
- A demonstrated commitment to producing superior written work, graphics experience a plus;
- An interest in government ethics and money in politics issues;
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks;
- The ability to work collaboratively;
- Initiative to identify needs, take charge of tasks, and get things done in an exciting, fast-paced environment; and
- Excellent problem-solving skills with an ability to respond quickly to changing priorities.
The position is based in Washington, D.C. but will be hybrid with employees splitting their time between working at home and working in the office. The Digital Associate reports to the Communications Director and Digital Director.

CREW is seeking part-time legal interns for fall 2024. Responsibilities include legal and related research, analyzing emerging issues within the government ethics space, and assisting in the preparation of complaints, reports, and other written products. Interested applicants must have completed at least one year of law school and must possess strong writing and analytical skills. This position is based in the DC metro area and will be a hybrid of remote and in-person (as needed). Therefore, the applicant must also be able to work independently and have self-motivation to complete tasks without supervision. The legal intern position offers law students an opportunity to participate in current hot-button issues of great public importance. Interns will receive a stipend of $1000 a month.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) is seeking a paid part-time communications intern for the fall of 2024. As a nonpartisan nonprofit government watchdog, CREW is dedicated to rooting out government corruption and fighting the influence of money in politics through legal action and bold communications grounded by in-depth research.
The communications intern will assist in gaining coverage of CREW’s fight for an ethical and transparent government, learning how to monitor news and social media stories, create and keep press lists, draft and edit reports, press releases, and blog posts, track and interpret analytics, and develop web, email, and social media content. The ideal candidate will be an undergraduate student who is a strong writer and self-starter with a passion for ethics in government and interest in communications. This position is based in the DC metro area and will be a hybrid of remote and in-person (as needed). Therefore, the applicant must also be able to work independently and have self-motivation to complete tasks without supervision. Interns will receive a stipend of $700 a month.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) seeks undergraduate students to serve as research interns on a part-time basis for the fall of 2024. Undergraduate research interns will assist with research and operations alongside CREW’s research team. Interns will learn to use various sources of public information to track special interest spending, campaign spending, and political contributions, and will also review lobbying records.
The ideal candidate will show interest in government ethics issues, including but not limited to dark money in politics, transparency, and January 6th. The candidate must also demonstrate a strong attention to detail, eagerness to learn, and be hard-working and resourceful. Candidates must be able to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. This position is based in the DC metro area and will be a hybrid of remote and in-person (as needed). Therefore, the applicant must also be able to work independently and have self-motivation to complete tasks without supervision. Students with an interest in government accountability and ethics are highly preferred. Interns will receive a stipend of $700 a month.
