This is the second time Cecily Strong — SNL's go-to Latina impersonator (who, might I add, is not Latina) — played an epically distasteful and offensive Latina character. Her other notable role includes Mimi Morales, a Latina youth political advocate who came off as a ghetto, unintelligent teen who didn't know the first thing about politics.
So far, there seems to be a huge lack of diversity among Strong's Latina characters, perhaps due in part to the fact there isn't much diversity among SNL's cast members themselves. Though the long-running sketch comedy show recently added one black comedian and two black female writers to the show (an SNL first), they have yet to hire a single Latina cast member during show's 39-year run.
