Responsive Web Design Ensures Your Website Is Mobile-Friendly

Mobile First Web Design

In an increasingly mobile-centric world, a mobile-first approach to web design has become a crucial factor in any successful digital strategy. Mobile-first web design is all about creating websites that are first and foremost optimised for mobile devices, and then scaled up for larger screens such as tablets and desktops. This approach recognises the fundamental shift in user behaviour, with more than half of the global web traffic now originating from mobile devices. In [y], mobile-first design is not just a trend; it's an essential component of effective user engagement and high-quality user experience. Approximately 58% of all Internet browsing is now done from a mobile device. For some years now, Google has been ranking websites in its search engine results pages (SERPs) for mobile-first. In other words, if your website is not mobile-friendly, it will suffer in the search results. Our web design specialists will give you the peace of mind that your new website will be 100% mobile-friendly.

Mobile-first web design provides numerous advantages. Not only does it improve overall site usability for the majority of users who are accessing websites via mobile, but it also enhances SEO performance. Search engines like Google have recognised this shift in user behaviour and have implemented mobile-first indexing, meaning sites optimised for mobile are likely to rank higher in search results. Therefore, a mobile-first design approach significantly boosts the visibility of a website, increases user engagement, and consequently, improves conversion rates.

At Cotswold Websites, we are at the forefront of this digital revolution. We understand the importance of mobile-first web design, and we integrate this approach into every website we create. Each site is meticulously crafted with the mobile user in mind, ensuring smooth navigation, fast load times, and a user-friendly interface that holds and converts visitors. We are dedicated to delivering the best user experience possible and understand that in [y], a successful website means a mobile-first website. Take a look at our portfolio of recent websites and click on one of the links to see the beauty - and ease-of-use - of the website on a mobile device.

Why Use WordPress For Your Web Design Project?

First Impressions Matter

Having a visually appealing and user-friendly website is crucial for the success of your business. It acts as the window through which your audience perceives your brand. That's why at our web design agency, we understand the importance of creating a professionally designed WordPress website which captivates visitors and encourages them to engage with your products or services. Conversely, a poorly designed or unresponsive website can result in visitors leaving as quickly as they arrived.

When it comes to promoting your products or services successfully, having a well-constructed and professional website is an absolute must. That's why we specialize in utilizing the powerful WordPress content management system for all our web design projects. With its flexibility and user-friendliness, WordPress has become the platform of choice for over a third of the world's websites. As experts in WordPress web design, we take pride in using premium WordPress themes to create visually stunning and engaging websites. Feel free to reach out to us to discuss your exciting new web design project.

When you entrust us with creating your WordPress website, we go the extra mile to understand your goals and aspirations. We believe that a website should reflect the unique vision and mission of your company. Our comprehensive approach includes exploring the full scope of your web design project, identifying the key elements and features you desire, and understanding the ultimate goals you have for your website. This will include:

  • The full scope of your web design project.
  • Which elements and features you want to have included in the new website.
  • What your ultimate goals for the website are.
However, we understand that at this stage, you may not have a clear direction for your web design project. Don't worry! Our experienced team is here to guide you with innovative website design ideas that have been proven to deliver results. Let us collaborate with you to bring your vision to life and create a website that captures the essence of your brand.

Conversion Rate Optimisation

Having a good-looking website is one thing, but having a website which converts visitors to leads or clients is transformational for your business. When creating a new website for you, we research your business sector so that we understand your needs and how your competition operates. This will help us create strong Calls To Action (CTAs), along with giving you sticky headers which contain a tappable telephone link and any other methods of contact (email links, pop-up contact forms etc.). These are designed to encourage the visitor to get in contact with you and "do" what you want them to do on the website.

Bespoke Websites

Every website we design and create is bespoke, as every business, however large or small, is unique. It is therefore important that your website stands out from those of your competitors. We take the time to research and analyse your business sector so that the best-possible bespoke website can be created for your precise business needs. Where needed, technology like dynamic content and loopers can be used to create high-performance websites, which can help achieve the seemingly impossible! Give us a call and discuss with us what it is that you would like to achieve with your new bespoke website.

Websites Should Be Designed To Convert

Whether you're in need of a standout eCommerce platform, a content-rich information site, or an efficient lead-capture page, every web design we create serves a clear purpose - to fuel your business growth. Each website is meticulously optimised to match your specific operational needs, ensuring that your online presence is as effective as possible.

Our web design approach zeroes in on your main goals for each page. With carefully crafted text that captivates both casual browsers and those seeking specific information, we optimise conversion rates and make your website work for you. The key to successful navigation, a crucial component of our web design process, is logical, user-friendly interfaces that help your visitors find what they need. Experience the benefit of a professionally optimised web design with a focus on maximising conversion rates for your enterprise.

SEO Should Be Built Into Your Website As Standard

We firmly believe that a website without SEO is akin to a car without an engine - utterly ineffective! In contrast to many web design agencies that impose additional costs for search engine optimisation over and above the web design and build, we at Cotswold Websites deem this strategy counterproductive and detrimental to clients. Instead, we make it our mission to incorporate our expert SEO process into every new website we create, ensuring your website benefits from top-tier SEO from day one.

The pivotal role of good Search Engine Optimisation practice is acknowledged in our web design strategy right from the initial stages of web development. The endeavour of researching and selecting impactful keywords is such an integral part of our web design approach, that these keywords can significantly shape the overall website design. We believe that integrating search engine optimisation into the very fabric of the website design is absolutely essential. This seamless fusion of SEO and web design is a hallmark of our service at Cotswold Websites, and comes as standard with every new website we develop for our clients. Our commitment is to equip your website with the best SEO from the very start.

How Does Our Web Design Process Work?

We Translate Your Vision Into The Website You Want
As a web design agency serving your business, our goal is to make the creation of your new responsive website a pleasure for you and to take the strain off your shoulders. You may have experienced the "industry standard" where the web design process can leave you feeling stranded, lost and with no idea of what you are going to receive and when! We take you through a clear process where you can be as much or as little involved as you want to be, but with each stage being clear to you.

Stage 1: Specification and Research

Right from the start of the web design project, we will discuss with you:

  • The functionality requirements
  • Other websites whose design is inspiring to you
  • How you want your website mapped out
  • The goals you have for your website
  • The keywords you want the website to rank for

Stage 2: Your Homepage Design

Once the web design specification has been agreed and signed-off, we start to work on the homepage. The homepage will determine the layout and styling of the rest of the website and so is an important page to get right first time. Working closely with you, we will design and build all the crucial elements of your website, such as the colours, fonts, menus, picture sizes and styles, which will be used across the whole website. With these website elements agreed upon early, the development of the rest of the website can be much quicker than otherwise. If you choose to, you will be able to view the homepage online at all stages of design, enabling you to make comments about the website's design.

Stage 3: Other Web Pages

When we are both happy that the design of the homepage is good, we move on to the rest of the pages on your website. As with the homepage, you will be able to view the pages as they are being designed so changes can be made along the way until you have the look and feel that you want to achieve. It is during this stage that we will test each web page for its mobile-friendliness. If necessary, alternative layouts will be created to suit the smaller screen sizes. This tends to be the case when full-screen parallax images are used for display on larger screens.

Stage 4: Integration of Additional Functionality

Once the web design is complete and the new website is almost ready to go live, we will start to build in the the last nuts and bolts of your new content management website. These include the integration of Google Maps, Google reCaptcha to keep your email forms safe and Google Analytics to keep track of the website's performance. These tasks will require access to your Google account to enable the integration of these web services. At this stage, if it has not already been done during the homepage design, all of your social media account links will be added to your bespoke website.

Stage 5: Pre Go Live Functionality Testing

Before we are ready to make the new website public and to receive your first visitors, the website needs to be fully checked that every feature on every page operates as intended. This important stage of the web design project is to catch any glitches that may be present before the website is live. You, the client, will usually be asked to participate in this testing, so that you get a good feel for the website and how your visitors will use it.

Stage 6: Go Live!

Go live is the point at which you have signed off the web design and are happy for it to be shown to the world! This is where it starts working for you to help grow your business. We will submit your website to Google's Search Console for them to index it and therefore rank your website in their search results. We will also check that there are no bad or incorrect links in the website so Google and other search engines are able to index your new website correctly. From here on, we highly recommend that you start your social media marketing campaigns to promote the website and drive traffic to it.

Stage 7: Post Go Live Checks

With the new website live and public, we will keep a close eye on it to make sure that there are no unexpected glitches. These include making sure the contact forms are working; on eCommerce websites, checking that the add to basket and checkout functions as expected; checking the behaviour of pop-ups and any other features which require the website visitor to interact with it.

How Much Does Web Design Cost?
£?

How Much Does A New Website Cost?

One of the most common questions we are asked is, "how much does responsive web design cost?" It is a great question, but one which can only be answered accurately with a good idea of what you want from your website. The pricing of all the professional websites that Cotswold Websites create is dependent upon the specifications of the web design work you want. We will take into account:
  1. The size of the website (number of pages and/or products for an eCommerce website).
  2. Any advanced features you want to take advantage of.
  3. How much text we will need to provide.
  4. Whether you provide images optimised for web design, or not.
  5. If you need logos and other branding designed.
  6. Whether it is to be an eCommerce website or a membership website.
  7. Other functionality you specify.

Once the full specification of the web design project has been agreed upon, we will quote you the price for your new website. Our prices are fixed with no hidden fees, so long as there are no changes to the specification once work has started. Changes to the web design specification will usually mean new pricing needs to be agreed upon, as the changes may mean significant knock-on effects to the planned web design.

You Are In Control Of Your Website

No Lock-In Contracts or Controls

What do we mean by "you are in control of your website"?

We mean exactly what it says! Once the website is complete, you will have 100% control over every aspect of your website, its hosting, premium plugins and themes. This is more important that it sounds and is something clients of many web design agencies find out to their cost later on when they want to move their website elsewhere or take over greater control of their website.

Right from the start of the web design project we will ask you to set-up your own web hosting account and buy the required licences for any WordPress themes or plugins. The simple reason for this is that all accounts and renewals are then in your own business's name and only you have control over each of them. We will guide you through every step of this to make sure you safely remain legally the owner of the licences or services being bought.

Why Is It Important To Have Control Of The Website?

It is important to have control of every aspect of your website and its infrastructure. Some web design agencies use tactics, which are not clear to their clients, until it is too late. A website is a major investment for any business and the content should be your intellectual property. There are some web design agencies, which use underhand, or at best, dubious tactics to lock clients in with them for the long-term. Be careful not to fall victim to any of these tactics.

Below is a list of how some web design agencies operate and how Cotswold Websites works with you.

Web Design Agency Lock-In Tricks To Avoid

  • If the web design agency asks you to use their own web hosting package, there is a risk that you will have entered a long-term contract, or that if you want to change the hosting provider, you may find problems (see below). Web hosting provided with the web design is the biggest cause of problems if you want to part ways with the web designer.
  • If the web design agency offers to register and manage your domain for you, be aware that if it is not registered to your business, you do not own the domain. You may also be paying more than you need to for domain renewal due to agency fees.
  • You may be offered a WordPress theme, which is included with your web design project. A lot of web design agencies have a licence for a premium theme which allow it to be used on unlimited websites (including yours). The catch here is that if you leave that web designer, for any reason, you will need to purchase your own licence to be able to continue to use that theme on your website! Most themes have an annual fee. The back-up of your website will not be given to you until you have bought the licence.
  • You can run into the same problem, as with the theme, with some of the plugins used for your website, if you ever decide to leave the current web designer. The types of plugin where this issue is most frequently caused is for contact forms, eCommerce add-ons or membership site plugins. These types of plugin can cost several hundred pounds each to renew the licence each year! This is a typical lock-in tactic used by some web design agencies and you may not be told that the web designer's licence is being used and only find out when you want to leave them.
  • Another lock-in trick used by some unscrupulous web design agencies is to lock down the admin access, so that only they have full access and you have reduced access and are thus reliant upon the web designer for many things. The excuse used is that it is too risky to give your staff full admin access as they could easily destroy the website. Always make sure that you will have total access to your website's admin area. Don't be held to ransom!
  • Be aware that some agencies use bespoke website builders or coding, which only they know how to use. If this happens and you ever want to leave the web design agency, you will either have to work out how the website is built, or more likely, you will need to commission a new website. Always ask if the website is being built using methods that any web designer in the future can easily work with. If it is not, avoid at all costs!
  • Before you enter into a web design agreement with an agency, ask them to confirm if the website will be optimised for search within the project fee. Many web designers are not experienced with SEO and you could find that your new website has had no optimisation whatsoever (bad news). Other web design agencies offer SEO only as an add-on to the web design project, which can add substantial additional cost to your project. Make sure you know what you are getting before you sign a contract!
  • Establish right at the outset what happens to your website once it is live and you have paid the final web design fee, but problems are found with the website. Does the web design agency offer a warranty to rectify any problems discovered, within a given time of the website going live? If not, avoid them, or it will be up to you to sort the problems out!
  • One final thing to check with your web design agency, before starting your project, is do you actually own the finished website. Believe it or not, if you try to leave a web design agency, some will refuse to let you have "your" website. This is because it has been built using their licences, is hosted on their servers, they registered the domain (not you) and they are holding you to ransom, forcing you to either stay with them or you having to have a brand new website built.

What You Will Get With Cotswold Websites

  • We will always ask you to have your own web hosting account, which is registered in your business's name, so that you have full control of the account. This gives you peace of mind in case you ever want to make changes. In all cases, we recommend UK-based Krystal Hosting who have super fast SSD drives, use 100% green energy and provide great customer support.
  • We will always ask you to register your domain yourself, so that the registration and renewal are all in your own control. This could be with the same company as your web host, or a registrar such as 123-reg.co.uk or Godaddy.com
  • We use Themeco's Pro Theme for all the websites we build, thanks to its incredible features and page builders, which use cutting edge technology and features you will not find elsewhere. We will ask you to buy and register your licence at the start of the project so you always have control of the theme. A big advantage of Themeco is that their pricing model allows you to buy a licence with a small one-off fee, which includes lifetime support and updates. Most theme providers charge a similar fee each and every year!
  • If any premium plugins are needed to build your website, we will discuss with you at the very start of the web design project which ones are likely to be needed for your website, so that you are fully aware of the potential ongoing costs for using them. Once agreed on the scope of the project, we will ask you to buy the required plugin licences, so that the renewals and support for those plugins are registered to you and you have total control over them. The added benefit is that there is no risk of you having to pay a "management" fee for the annual renewal!
  • With any website that Cotswold Websites builds, you will always have full admin access in your own unique login account. Where requested, we will teach you the functions and tasks you want to learn and we will warn you of settings which should only be touched if you know what you are doing! If you are unhappy with managing the website yourself, we offer comprehensive website maintenance plans, where the cancellation notice required is just 30 days.
  • We only use the standard WordPress core and Themeco's Pro Theme's Cornerstone builders to create our websites. Therefore, anyone with out-of-the-box knowledge of WordPress and Pro will be able to make changes to your website with ease. If you would like to learn to use these yourself, we offer WordPress training courses for people of all levels of experience. Pro is intuitive to use, once you have learned the basics of its controls.
  • We include SEO in every web design project as standard, as we believe that an unoptimised website is the equivalent to a car without an engine - useless. This will give your website the best chance of starting to rank and perform well from the start. Don't forget though that SEO is a long-term strategy and even though the website has been optimised upon hand-over to you, SEO work needs to continue, if you want to keep top rankings and outperform your competitor websites.
  • Cotswold Websites continues to actively monitor your website for a month after the website has gone live. We check that all functionality, such as contact forms, or eCommerce features work correctly. If not, we fix them, as this is within the scope of the overall project, as far as we are concerned - so long as the problem has not been caused by your staff.
  • Working with Cotswold Websites, you can be sure of your ownership of every piece of your website from day one. If you have carefully read the above list of how we operate, you will have noticed that we insist that you have control and ownership of all of the infrastructure and components of your website and can do with them whatever you wish to. Even if we help to create content for you, the copyright is vested in you and is not retained by us in any way.
The moral of the story here is, be thorough when choosing a web design agency to build a new website for you and make sure you avoid being locked into a contract or situation, which could cost you dearly to extricate yourself from. Cotswold Websites guarantees you that you will always have full ownership of your finished website.

How Do I Know If I Need A New Website?

Not Mobile-Friendly

If your website is not mobile-friendly you definitely need a new website. Google have been prioritising mobile-friendly web design over those which are not responsive, for some time now. A non mobile-friendly website will be a turn-off for your customers and will not rank well for you. The layout of a mobile-friendly website's content will change to suit a mobile device's screen size and shape automatically.

Embarrassment

Are you embarrassed about the state of your website and its design? Does your website give your customers a good impression of your business? If you cannot answer yes to both questions then you need a new website. Professional websites are integral to a successful business and will often be the first impression a potential customer gets of your business. Don't let your website put them off.

Low Conversion Rates

Are you finding that you are getting very few new customers coming through your website? The website's traffic may be very low or your visitors are not clicking through to contact you or buy from your website. Google Analytics will give you an idea of this. It may be that your web design is poorly executed and that you need to go back to the drawing board to have a new professional website created for you.

High Bounce Rates

High bounce rates are an indicator that visitors to your website are not impressed with what they are seeing. A high bounce rate means that your visitors are leaving the website without browsing to a second page. Reasons for this can vary, but usually include at least one of the following: it is not a mobile-friendly website, it loads slowly, the layout is ugly, or your website's content is unclear and confusing.
