This Alabama Farmhouse Is One Of the Most Colorful Homes You'll Ever See

This is what happens when a folk artist gets her hands on a 1,750-square-foot farmhouse.

By Caroline Collins McKenzie

There are DIYs, and then there are DIYs. The former may call for Elmer's glue or a can of milk paint. The latter calls for serious roll-up-your-sleeves labor—as in digging posts and nailing floors by hand, like Country Living reader Kelley Bentley Ash did with her 1,750-square-foot farmhouse on nine rolling acres in Northern Alabama. Lovingly built by hand, this Southern charmer proves that everything is sweeter when started from scratch.

Of course, the hard work was nothing new to the mother of three, who, in addition to hammering a whopping 3,000 nails in the name of building a dream home, is a folk artist (check out Sweet Gravy Studio) and co-owner, alongside husband Mark, of an architectural design firm (Hovel Design Studio; 678-360-6432). The only thing missing: cable. Says Kelley, "With three kids, two dogs, 20 chickens, two horses, a donkey, a cat, and a parrot, we don't have time for it!"

Kelley's multitasking mentality also came in handy when it came to cutting costs. To craft most of the white paneling in the house, Kelley raided damaged shelving boards from Lowe's. "I'd ask for the 'call' boards—the ones they take off the showroom floor—and get them at really discounted prices," she says. "Some were bowed on the ends, but we'd just saw that part off." Kelley had to fight for the garage door, too. "Mark likes very straightforward design, but I like the way it opens to the back porch and overlooks the pasture," she says.

The laid-back, come-as-you-are eating area is anchored by a French pine table, a splurge from years ago. "I bit the bullet because I love the shades of coral," Kelley says. Five ladder-back chairs, bought for $10 apiece and revived with glossy blue paint, add another pop of color, as do the mint-green barn door and the primitive green hutch, a lucky find at a hair salon's going-out-of-business sale. She found the burlap sack–covered light fixture on one of her many treasure hunts. Kelley says the wood-burning stove is the "jewel of the house. Not only does it provide warmth—I can cook on it, too!"

While plenty of country kitchens brim with sentimental hand-me-downs like recipe boxes and serving platters, it's rare that the paneling is a family heirloom. "My grandmother's childhood home was in disrepair," Kelley says, "so I dismantled the wood myself and used it here." Retro-inspired butter-yellow appliances, knotty pine floors, and barn wood cabinets complete the space.

The Ashes made sure that all three children—Hollings, Chatham, and Finn—had spaces to call their own. Finn's room is a treasure trove of thrifty finds, including a railroad crate headboard and mallard paint-by-numbers.

Chatham's space is a study in contrast, thanks to dueling paint colors. She also has also been bitten by the DIY bug: She makes these dolls herself!

The same warm gold appears in Hollings' room, to frame her unique bed and highlight the ceiling. Kelley and Mark designed a recessed bunk, which frees up floor space.

The zinc sink was one of Kelley's first purchases for the home. "You can tell it's French because there's only one basin. American versions have a double-sink design," she says.

One of Kelley's folk art paintings (she's had two of her pieces appear on The Walking Dead) overlooks this picturesque porch—a frequent hangout for Miss Mary Mack (far right), who stylishly coordinates with the horse-adorned rug. A hodgepodge of weathered furniture rounds out the rustic space.
