Marie-Thérèse Frebet, known as Myriam or “Maize” to friends and family, passed away in Louisville, KY on June 25, 2024, at the age of 99 years old. She was born in Normandy, France to Nicolas Frebet, and Marie-Louise Lalande, on November 4, 1924 in Chanu (Orne). She was the third child of seven siblings. After studying in France, she received her Masters in Teaching at Loyola in New Orleans after she arrived in the United States in 1954, and remained here until her death. She devoted her life to teaching young children through the Montessori method. She began her teaching life in Mamou, LA, eventually moving to Louisville in 1974, where she taught at Hayfield Montessori School until her retirement.

She is survived by her siblings, Monique Denoncourt (Leo), Odile Frebet, and Élisabeth Béhier (François). She is also survived in the United States by her nieces; Myriam Denoncourt-Dobson (David), Aline Abell (Michael), Danièle Denoncourt, and Bénédicte Partin (Matthew).

In addition to teaching young students, she also helped to train new Montessori teachers in Toronto, ON, and had a great interest in fine arts. She spent many years taking ceramics classes at UL under the tutelage of Tom and Ginny Marsh, as well as weaving classes where she made her own clothes. She enjoyed the seaside, travel, and made many good friends through her wit, and intellect. She spent her final two years under the care of Nazareth Home Clifton, and the family would like to thank them for their generosity of spirit, care, and kindness.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St Raphael the Archangel Church in Louisville, on August 2. The service will begin at 10 a.m., preceded by a visitation with the family at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Doctors Without Borders in her memory.
