The mayor’s office received notice of the impending suit one day after the town council voted to deny the church special approval to build the temple.
The religious coalition behind the petition owns about $172 million in Walmart, Costco, Kroger, Albertsons and Dallas-based McKesson.
More than 70 people spoke during the four-hour meeting about plans for the McKinney Texas Temple.
The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m., and those who did not get tickets can livestream it.
The elders for Cross Timbers Church said their former lead pastor made “inappropriate comments” that were “sexual in nature.”

Members took time to take in the damage from the July 19 blaze that tore through a nearly 135-year-old portion of the church, while also expressing joy to be back on campus.
The historic sanctuary suffered significant damage, but services haven’t stopped.
