Steve Carell is a better actor than people give him credit for. Largely because he’s known for his comedic skills, the Anchorman costar and former star of NBC’s The Office rarely gets mentioned in conversations about multifaceted character actors of this generation.

Which is a mistake, and one that might get corrected when people get a look at Carell in Foxcatcher. The first image of Carell in character has been shared via EW.com. We have it for you below.

We’re paying close attention because Foxcatcher comes front-loaded with all sorts of Oscar potential. Bennett Miller directs, for starters, and both of his previous films – Capote and Moneyball -- were nominated for Best Picture (deservedly so).

The subject matter also falls into that dark, introspective, ripped-from-the-headlines bucket Oscar often loves to dip. Carell will play John du Pont, member of a prestigious Pittsburgh family who, in 1996, committed murder on the property of his family’s Foxcatcher facility. Du Pont killed Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo), a close friend at the time. After the shooting, du Pont locked himself in the family mansion for two days while police tried to talk him out.

I’m assuming that’s where Carell is sitting in the above photo, contemplating his next move. It’s his look that catches me off guard. That nose, and the grey hair… not what we’d expect from Carell. Then again, Miller tends to keep us guessing.

In addition to Carell and Ruffalo, Foxcatcher costars Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Anthony Michael Hall and Vanessa Redgrave. It recently was reported that Sony Pictures Classics will release the film on December 20, giving it a prime Oscar slot. Could a trailer drop next? We’ll keep you posted on this extremely interesting drama.

And if you are looking to watch a stirring film that shows Carell can play against type, check out one of the following films, which all show the actor’s range and prove he should have been on Oscar’s radar for years now:

2. Dan in Real Life
