A delightfully monstrous time awaits you with the newest horror movies streaming on Max and Netflix in August. Sultry vampires, killer-possessed dolls, Godzilla, zombies, and whatever Beetlejuice is have come to the streamers this month.

There isn’t a huge amount of options, but the options are great. Two AMC series are coming to Netflix for the first time, and there is a whole lot of Chucky. Netflix also has the streaming premiere of one of the most acclaimed Godzilla films in history, which won the mighty Kaiju his first Oscar.

While Max only has one horror movie this month, it’s a fan favorite that has a sequel coming soon. The fact that it is back on streaming is probably not a coincidence.

  • Beetlejuice (1988) - Streaming on August 1

Beetlejuice is one of the most charming horror comedies ever and is the second feature film from creepy auteur Tim Burton. After Pee Wee's Big Adventure, which does have a very memorable scary sequence, Burton dove right into the horror pool.

Michael Keaton stars as the irascible "bio-exorcist" that the newly dead married couple, played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, hire after their all too human attempts to frighten the annoying family that has moved into their beloved home fail miserably.  Catherine O'Hara, Winona Ryder, Sylvia Sidney, Glenn Shadix, Robert Goulet, and Dick Cavett join in on the grotesque festivities as the rest of the cast.

Beetlejuice is now streaming on Max.

  • Child’s Play 2 (1990) - Streaming on August 1

Netflix's Chucky binge does not include the first film but does start with Child’s Play 2. The slasher film sequel is written by creator Don Mancini and directed by John Lafia. In it, Andy's stalwart mom is institutionalized, and Chucky continues to pursue the boy with the intent of exchanging bodies with him for good.

Alex Vincent, Jenny Agutter, Gerrit Graham, Christine Elise, and Grace Zabriskie star in this second film in the continuing series.

Don Mancini returned to write the screenplay, and Jack Bender,  the director, would later go on to direct television shows such as Lost, Game of Thrones, and The Sopranos.

Child’s Play 3 is now streaming on Netflix.

  • Bride of Chucky (1998) - Streaming on August 1

The film is the first to delve deeply into the comedy inherent in the series' core. It was written by Don Mancini and directed by Ronny Yu.

Jennifer Tilly, Katherine Heigl, later the star of Grey's Anatomy, Nick Stabile, John Ritter, and Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky star in the film, which takes us all on one scary road trip.

First comes love, then comes marriage, and then comes Chucky with the baby carriage? After marriage, usually, it is time to have children, and after Chucky and Tiffany are again revived by magic, the air is pregnant with danger. Seed of Chucky is the first film in the series to be written and directed by Chucky creator Don Mancini.

This black comedy slasher stars Jennifer Tilly, Redman, Hannah Spearritt, John Waters, Billy Boyd, and, as always, Brad Dourif as the gory carnage continues.

Seed of Chucky is now streaming on Netflix.

Don Mancini once again writes and directs the sixth film in the Chucky franchise, Curse of Chucky.  Fiona Dourif, as Nica Pierce, Danielle Bisutti,  Jennifer Tilly, Chantal Quesnelle, A Martinez, and Brad Dourif are the stars of this film that changes course from Seed of Chucky.

Nica Pierce begins to suspect a mysterious doll that has suddenly been sent to her family for the horrifying deaths of her family members and begins to investigate the killer names Charles Lee Ray.

Fiona Dourif, Michael Therriault, Adam Hurtig, Alex Vincent, Jennifer Tilly, and Brad Dourif star in the seventh entry and, for now, the final film in the Child's Play franchise. Nica Pierce has been institutionalized but is disturbed by the reappearance of a Chucky doll.

In this supernatural slasher, written and directed by Don Mancini, Charles Lee Ray has learned to create a magical cult of Chucky in multiple bodies. Bad news, but Andy Barclay, his original best friend and opponent, has returned.

Kim Dickens, Cliff Curtis, Frank Dillane, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Rubén Blades, and Colman Domingo have been the series' central cast members since the beginning, but only a few survive to the last episode. Netflix has some special treats for horror fans this month, including the streaming debut of Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color. Director, writer, and visual effects supervisor Takashi Yamazaki really made a magnificent new Godzilla film for the 21st Century, and this year, it was announced that a black and white version of the film would also be released as Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color.

The new version of the film is not merely drained of color but is a cut-by-cut alternate that uses various mattes to create a new version of the film. The film was a critically acclaimed monster hit and stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, and Munetaka Aoki.

Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color is now streaming on Netflix.

  • Interview with the Vampire (2022) - Streaming on August 1

Another treat for Netflix viewers from AMC is the release of the first season of AMC's television series adaptation of Anne Rice's Interview with a Vampire. The critically acclaimed series, created by playwright and television writer Rolin Jones, stars Jacob Anderson, Sam Reid, Eric Bogosian, and Bailey Bass.

The show is much more faithful to Rice's books and includes the deadly romance between Louis de Pointe du Lac and Lestat de Lioncourt and keeps the framing of the interview with a journalist, Daniel Molloy, as the center of the storytelling. In this version, Molloy is much older and suspects that Louis may not be a reliable narrator.

Interview with the Vampire (Season 1) is now streaming on Netflix.
