Here’s some good news to head into the weekend with: according to a new report over at Variety, Jennifer Reeder’s Perpetrator (which is set to debut at the Berlin International Film Festival in February) has been picked up for release by the good folks at Shudder, who previously released Reeder’s Night’s End and V/H/S/94, which the filmmaker directed a segment for.
Perpetrator stars Kiah McKirnan, Christopher Lowell, Melanie Liburd, Ireon Roach, and Alicia Silverstone. Variety describes the film thusly:
“Written and directed by Reeder, Perpetrator follows Jonny (McKirnan), an impulsive teenage girl living in a town where young women continue to go missing, and revolves around the power she’s forced to unlock to survive. The filmmakers say that the film is ‘inspired by the shared experience of generations of women,’ as well as an ‘exploration of youthful chaos.’”
Reeder adds:
“This is a significant moment for women working in genre films. Women are very well suited for horror in particular — we have a personal relationship to fear from a very young age, and are able to bleed for days and not die. This film in particular takes on the myth of the out-of-control teen girl — the wild child. In this story, she has agency in her lawlessness and embraces her abject nature. Perpetrator is dark but feminine, a nuanced noir, a grrrl power take on modern horror.”
Reeder, who also directed 2019’s excellent Knives and Skin, is a helluva talent, and we’re excited to hear she’s got a new feature on deck. As of this writing there’s no indication as to when Perpetrator might actually arrive on Shudder, but of course we will relay that information to you, the gentle FANGORIA readers of the world, just as soon as we find out.
