The Xenomorphs are coming, and the top horror movies streaming this week reflect the overwhelming interest in the newest film in the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, which opens on Friday, August 16. Yes, there has been a resurgence of the classic Alien films, but this week, you have a classic and one of the prequels in the mix as well.

Two of the films from the A Quiet Place series are in the top ten, too. Abigail continues to pirouette among the most popular frights, as does another dancing queen of horror, Pearl. Satan and deadly ghosts from the afterlife are still possessing horror fans’ imagination and won’t let go.

  • Abigail (2024) - Streaming on Peacock

Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Will Catlett, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud, Alisha Weir, and Giancarlo Esposito star in this witty and surprising horror film, even though everyone knows about the vampire ballerina.

Co-directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. of the film collective Radio Silence keep the audience guessing with terror as members of a special kidnapping team find that they are the victims of a game they had not planned for.

Abigail (2024) is now streaming on Peacock.

  • Late Night With the Devil (2023) - Streaming on Shudder

Another horror film with a lighter touch and a comedic bent is Late Night With the Devil. David Dastmalchian, Laura Gordon, Ian Bliss, Fayssal Bazzi, Ingrid Torelli, Rhys Auteri, and Georgina Haig are the stars of the film, which has the style of 1970s late-night television and lots of Satanic hijinks.

Colin and Cameron Cairnes co-directed and wrote the film based on their memories of Australian late night TV and clearly spent a lot of time staying up later than their bedtimes, but in service to a fantastic future fright film.

Late Night With the Devil is streaming on Shudder and AMC+.

  • Alien (1979) - Streaming on Fubo

Speaking of the 70s, Ridley Scott'Alien shocked and terrified late 70s audiences with his epic space horror film Alien. The concept is much more well known now, but imagine being in the first audience that saw the Xenomorphs for the first time. It rocked their world.

Here's the synopsis: The crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin.

Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm and Yaphet Kotto are the amazing cast that made the concepts come to life, and Dan O'Bannon, who would later continue to thrill audiences with the new concepts he brought to The Return of the Living Dead.

Alien is now streaming on Fubo and Hulu.

  • Pearl (2022) - Streaming on Prime Video

While Ti West's broke the director's work into the mainstream, Pearl continues to fascinate audiences while they watch at home. It is pretty rare when a period horror film keeps such a grip on viewers, but Pearl is no ordinary scary movie.

With the film's beautiful cinematography and deadly and enthralling performance from lead Mia Goth, it's got something special. Remember, Pearl is a star. David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, Emma Jenkins-Purro, and Alistair Sewell are the other able actors in the cast who flesh out the characters in Pearl's reality rather than her very active fantasies.

Pearl is streaming on Prime, Fubo, and Hoopla.

  • Bone Tomahawk (2015) - Streaming on Hulu

Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, Lili Simmons, Richard Jenkins, Evan Jonigkeit, genre stalwart Sid Haig, and David Arquette star in Bone Tomahawk, which has returned to the top ten.

In the dying days of the old west, an elderly sheriff and his posse set out to rescue their town's doctor from cannibalistic cave dwellers. Author Stephen King tweeted about the film on July 24, and Netflix added it to its service around the same time.

Bone Tomahawk is now streaming on Hulu and Netflix.

  • A Quiet Place (2018) - Streaming on Paramount+

Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Cade Woodward, Leon Russom, John Krasinski, and Noah Jupe are the stars of this film about a family struggling for survival in a world invaded by alien creatures with ultra-sensitive hearing.

Since the franchise's latest film, the prequel A Quiet Place: Day One, has come to video on demand, it would seem that fans are still watching the series and perhaps binging all of the films now that they are all available at home. That sounds like a good idea.

A Quiet Place is streaming on Paramount+ and Fubo.

  • Tarot (2024) - Streaming on Shudder

Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg co-directed and co-wrote Tarot, which stars Harriet Slater, Adain Bradley, Avantika, Wolfgang Novogratz, Humberly González, Larsen Thompson, and Olwen Fouéré.

Based on the novel "Horrorscope," the film is about a group of friends who recklessly violate the sacred rule of Tarot readings; they unknowingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards. One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death.

Tarot is now streaming on Shudder.

  • Talk to Me (2022) - Streaming on Hoopla

Talk to Me continues to speak the language of the audience and haunts the top ten again this week. Co-directors Danny and Michael Philippou recently announced that their next film, Bring Her Back, had wrapped filming, but it doesn't seem to be connected with Talk to Me.

Sophie Wilde, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Miranda Otto, and Zoe Terakes give committed and compelling performances that enhance the terror of one of 2022's scariest films.

Talk to Me is streaming on Hoopla and Fubo.

  • A Quiet Place Part II (2020) - Streaming on Paramount+

The actor and director of A Quiet Place, John Krasinski, became the writer of the series with A Quiet Place Part II. Krasinski took over the making of the film and ceded the acting to Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, and Djimon Hounsou as the surviving characters of the first movie.

The family must move on from their home and try to find a new, safe place. When they have to leave, they discover that the extraterrestrial monsters aren't the only threats in the world that they must face.

A Quiet Place Part II is streaming on Paramount+.

  • Alien: Covenant (2017) - Streaming on Hulu

Alien: Covenant is sometimes referred to as one of the most grim and darkest movies in the Alien franchise and among the Alien prequels, but the film cannot be denied this week.  The film stars an amazing cast, including Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Amy Seimetz, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, and Callie Hernandez.

The crew of a terraforming ship, The Covenant, is on a mission to the planet Origae-6 and is woken from stasis to deal with damage to the ship. The ship is filled with thousands of colonists, and the crew members are married couples. When they hear a human voice broadcasting from a planet that seems more habitable, they make the unfortunate choice to explore that planet, and the terror begins.

Alien: Covenant is streaming on Hulu and Fubo.
