Capital One Venture X Introduction

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is designed to elevate your travel experience while earning rewards on everything you buy. This card checks all those boxes and may be one of the best cards we’ve ever reviewed.

First, the welcome bonus speaks for itself: Earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.

Earning rewards on the card couldn’t be simpler: Earn 2 miles per dollar on all eligible purchases, 5 miles per dollar on flights booked through Capital One Travel, 5 miles per dollar on Capital One Entertainment purchases through 12/31/25 and 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars when booking via Capital One Travel. No opt-ins, worrying about categories or shopping with a specific vendor.

Redeeming miles is just as easy. You can apply miles toward any travel purchase made on your card. You also have the option to transfer miles to travel partners, if you want to up your redemption game.

The card offers the protections a travel card should have including trip cancellation and interruption insurance. It also offers the ubiquitous Priority Pass membership allowing entry for you and two guests into over 1,300 airport lounges worldwide, once you enroll. There’s also a Capital One lounge network, but as of now it is still tiny.

The Venture X, for an annual fee of $395, provides a 10,000 anniversary miles bonus starting on your first anniversary and a $300 annual credit for bookings through Capital One Travel. Those two alone may justify the annual fee when you’re doing the math to determine whether the card makes sense for you.

Venture X is not perfect, though, as it lacks the hotel partner status present on competing cards.

What Is the Venture X Card Best For?

The Venture X Card is a solid option for travelers who want a touch of luxury without sacrificing rewards potential. As a high-end travel credit card, the Capital One Venture X Card ranks well across our site for travel, international travel and travel insurance.

Capital One Venture X Credit Requirements

  • Excellent credit
  • A physical address within the U.S.
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age and above
  • Applicants under 21 must demonstrate independent income

Capital One Venture X Credit Card Rewards

Earning Rewards

The earning process on the Venture X card is pretty straightforward: Earn 2 miles per dollar on all eligible purchases, 5 miles per dollar on flights booked through Capital One Travel, 5 miles per dollar on Capital One Entertainment purchases through 12/31/25 and 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars when booking via Capital One Travel.

You’ll notice the expanded travel earnings, but there’s a catch: Increased earnings only apply if you use the Capital One travel portal for bookings. For airfare there’s no problem, especially since Capital One has partnered with Hopper to help you find the best airfares. But for hotels and car rentals, you may lose status benefits when you book via an online travel agency (OTA). Hotels and rental companies are likely to consider the Capital One portal a third-party booking site.

New cardholders can qualify for a generous welcome bonus: Earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. And after the first year, there’s a 10,000-mile bonus awarded each card anniversary.

Redeeming Rewards

Like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, Venture X offers the same easy ways to get your travel going. You can purchase travel as you would normally, then when the charge posts you can apply your miles toward any purchases in that category. Keep in mind that sometimes things you think will bill as travel, such as theme park tickets, may land in a different category.

You can also use your rewards at 1 cent per mile on the Capital One travel portal. This is useful for airfare since your benefits apply no matter how you purchase your ticket. There are other uses such as Amazon purchases and gift card redemptions, but those generally offer less value than travel redemptions.

Finally, you can transfer your Venture X miles to a number of travel partners including Air Canada Aeroplan, Emirates Skywards and British Airways Executive Club. However, if you want straightforward redemptions on U.S.-based airlines, Capital One miles are not the best choice.

Capital One also has unique hotel partners in Wyndham, Choice Privileges and Accor, but lacks marquee hotel partners, such as Hyatt, Hilton or Marriott.

Rewards Potential

How to Maximize Capital One Venture X Rewards

Getting the most out of your credit card rewards always starts with taking advantage of the card’s welcome bonus. You can also earn an even heftier referral bonus if you refer friends and family to get their own Venture X Card.

When it comes to everyday spending, the more you use your Capital One Venture X card, the more the rewards will add up. But using your card for travel purchases through the Capital One Travel portal pays off especially handsomely, earning you 5 miles per dollar spent on flights and 10 miles per dollar spent on car rentals and hotel stays. Also, using your card for travel purchases is often a requirement to activate the valuable travel benefits that come with it.

Pro Tip
Capital One does not charge fees for adding additional authorized users to your account, so this card is an especially good prospect for adding additional users to help you rack up rewards miles quickly. Just make sure you trust them to wield your credit responsibly.

Transfer Partners

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers 1:1 miles transfer to over 15 different airline and hotel loyalty programs. It’s worth noting that Capital One’s airline transfer partners are all international carriers, although many of them are part of alliances that include domestic airlines.

15 Airline Partners

3 Hotel Partners

At first glance, the list of transfer partners might not seem that interesting. If you’re willing to dig a little, there are incredible sweet spots with lots of potential travel value. In particular, Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Avianca LifeMiles and British Airways Executive Club have flight awards that will appeal to all types of travelers.

How the Capital One Venture X Credit Card Stacks Up

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card vs. The Platinum Card® from American Express

The Platinum Card® from American Express (terms apply, see rates & fees) is the OG ultra-premium card. It earns American Express Membership Rewards®, which are valuable because they are so flexible. While Capital One offers airline partners, Membership Rewards partners with more domestic partners, such as Delta and Hilton. That option could make using Membership Rewards points more convenient for someone who doesn’t want to dig too deeply into award charts when redeeming.

Amex sells exclusivity with the Platinum Card and has bundled “lifestyle perks” such as an Equinox membership credit with enrollment along with the travel benefits you would expect from a travel rewards card. The American Express Centurion Lounges and Delta Sky Club access (when you fly same-day with Delta), in addition to Priority Pass (when you enroll) beat the Capital One lounge lineup. Effective 2/1/25, American Express Platinum card members will receive 10 Delta Sky Club visits per year; unlimited visits can be earned when total purchases exceed $75,000 in 2024 and each calendar year thereafter.

However, Amex credits are more onerous to use than the ones Capital One provides: Amex doles out many of its credits in monthly installments and places fine print on others (such as the airline incidental credit) that Capital One does not. Capital One does require purchases to be through the travel portal to qualify for the travel credit, but since airline fares can be booked via any method and still qualify for elite benefits, the requirement seems more manageable.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card vs. Chase Sapphire Reserve®

Up until now, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® has provided the best competition for the Amex Platinum. But with Venture X matching its benefits in almost every way for a lower annual fee, it may be time for the Sapphire Reserve to share the spotlight. The Sapphire Reserve is still a solid card offering up to a $300 travel benefit (that’s not tied to a portal like the Venture X), TSA PreCheck or Global Entry fee credit, high levels of travel insurance coverage and a Priority Pass membership for a $550 annual fee. Chase is also in the process of rolling out their own lounge network.

There’s one area where Chase reigns supreme: Many users find the travel partners on the Sapphire Reserve are much more robust. The ability to earn points toward partners like United and Hyatt may be worth the higher fee of the Sapphire Reserve for some.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card vs. Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

If you like the idea of flat-rate travel rewards but not the pricey annual fee, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card (rates & fees) could be a solid alternative. The annual fee drops to $95, but you’ll still earn solid rewards: 5 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, 5 miles per dollar spent on Capital One Entertainment purchases through 12/31/25 and an unlimited 2 miles per dollar spent on other purchases.

Ease of use is the name of the game with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, just like the Venture X. To redeem miles, you can apply them directly to your travel charges on the card at the same 1 cent per mile. Venture miles are also transferable to the same partners as the Venture X at the same ratios.

Evaluate Credit Cards Side By Side

Is the Capital One Venture X Credit Card for You?

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is ideal for people who travel regularly and want to redeem rewards in the form of travel. If you’re looking to add an authorized user, this card is even better.

If you already have The Platinum Card® from American Express or Chase Sapphire Reserve® in your wallet, take a hard look at the Venture X come renewal time. For a significantly lower annual fee, you get many of the same benefits as other premium travel credit cards. Even better, the Venture X sheds many of the hassles Amex Platinum has saddled upon its customers with its ever-evolving coupon book approach.

Methodology

Forbes Advisor considers a variety of criteria when assigning credit cards a rating. Cards are graded based on numerous factors including:

  • Annual fees
  • Welcome bonus offers
  • Ongoing earning rates
  • Value of individual points or miles
  • Included travel or merchant credits
  • Additional cardholder benefits

Card features we expect cardholders to use the most often are weighted more heavily in our ratings. Altogether, the factors come together to provide a star rating for each individual card.
