Miley Cyrus has several singles in her catalog that can be called “career-defining,” with each earning that distinction for different reasons. One of her many smashes, “Party in the U.S.A.,” has become hugely popular again, if only for a short time.
“Party in the U.S.A.” is one of several songs that surged in consumption around the Fourth of July holiday. Billboard reports that whether it be streams or sales, the cut was up in terms of overall listening, as Americans returned to the track to help celebrate the country’s birthday.
Streams of “Party in the U.S.A.” rose significantly, which makes sense, since that’s how most people listen to music these days. From the week before the tracking period that included July 4 to the one that just ended–which featured the holiday–Cyrus’ bop racked up 2.9 million streams. That sum is up 196% from one frame to the next.
The cut also became a bestseller again. “Party in the U.S.A.” sold nearly 2,300 copies in the same timeframe. When compared to the week before, the song’s sales count climbed by 167%.
All those streams, video views, and purchases on platforms like iTunes help “Party in the U.S.A.” find its way back to just one Billboard chart. The tune reappears at No. 143 on the Billboard Global 200 list, which ranks the most-consumed songs in the world.
“Party in the U.S.A.” has now spent just 12 weeks on the Billboard Global 200. The tally was introduced just a few years ago–long after Cyrus stopped promoting the cut, so it usually only returns and adds to its length of time on the list every July. It has thus far failed to crack the upper half of the roster, as it’s stalled at No. 111.
Cyrus is one of a number of well-known musicians who find their way back to at least one Billboard chart this week with a timely song. Ray Charles, James Brown, Bruce Springsteen, and Lee Greenwood all appear on a tally–or more–with a tune that Americans associate with the holiday for one reason or another.
