‘The Man With 1000 Kids’ Dethroned In Netflix’s Top 10 List By A New Show

Following

I can’t say I would have predicted a documentary called “The Man With 1000 Kids” would remain on top of Netflix’s Top 10 list for almost two weeks, but that’s exactly what’s happened. Only now has it been dethroned by a new series, Receiver, a documentary about receivers in the NFL.

The Man With 1000 Kids is a very weird documentary topic, it’s about a “prolific sperm door” who lied about how many times he had donated sperm under Dutch guidelines, which allow for 25 children with 12 mothers total. Instead, his lies made it so he had allegedly 1000 kids around the world, though he said on his YouTube channel that it’s more like 550. Well okay then, I guess that’s fine (it is not fine).

The topic seems to have fascinated viewers, and its performance is impressive given that it’s only three, 40 minute episodes, meaning staying on top of the list like that would be extra hard, as this is literally just a two-hour movie broken up into three parts.

As for Receiver, this is the sibling series to Quarterback, part of Netflix’s ongoing sports documentary series popularized by F1: Drive to Survive. Quarterback did well and is returning for season 2. Receiver is also doing well, clearly. The eight episodes follow five different receivers as opposed to three quarterbacks, which include Davante Adams, Justin Jefferson, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and Amon-Ra St. Brown. If it does good numbers, no doubt it will return for a second season as well.

The rest of the list is a lot of new entries, and as ever, very few scripted original shows. Hannah Berner’s We Ride at Dawn comedy special is already at #2. A new season of Vikings Valhalla is #4, and I expect that may rise. Supacell is down to #5 after never reaching #1, despite being #2 for a very long time. We still do not have word about a possible season 2, which is needed given the cliffhanger it ended on.

The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders are still hanging around at #7. New telenovela Desperate Lies and its 17 episodes have debuted at #8. Your Honor, one of the most obscure success stories of the past month, is still in the top 10 list at #9. That show has performed unreasonably well to the point where Showtime may have to consider bringing it back from the dead for a third season.

We’ll see how long Receivers stays on top, but it may be a bit.
