NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Cash Money founders Bryan “Birdman” Williams and Ronald “Slim” Williams received YouTube’s Leaders and Legends Award Thursday night at a gala in Los Angeles.
The iconic duo was recognized for their contributions to Black music and hip hop culture.
Cash Money Records was founded by the two brothers in 1991 and has been home to artists like Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes, Drake, Niciki Minaj, Tyga, and Bow Wow over the past 33 years.
New Orleans City Council President Helena Moreno presented the award. Lil Wayne, Mannie Fresh, Juvenile and other members of Cash Money were in attendance to accept the award.
“It is so clear that these two men who built Cash Money Records understand that to those who much is given, much is required…and they give back with such love and compassion to the neighborhood they called home and the city of New Orleans that loves them like family,” said Council President Moreno. “Their story is a source of inspiration for generations to come, proving that with vision and tenacity, dreams can indeed come true. Congrats on 30 years of Cash Money Records!”
“Birdman and Slim embody New Orleans to their core. They defied the odds, raising up some of rap and hip hop’s most iconic figures to superstardom and shattering sales records while doing it,” said Lyor Cohen, Global Head of Music at YouTube, in a statement.
It’s another feather in the cap of the music moguls on the 30th anniversary of Cash Money Records. Birdman and Slim were presented with the keys to New Orleans by Mayor LaToya Cantrell on Feb. 5.
Juvenile and Mannie Fresh are preparing to leave for the Hot Boyz of Summer Tour, celebrating the 25th Anniversary of “Back That Azz Up.” The tour starts and ends in New Orleans, at the Donna Color Explosion on July 7 and Saenger Theatre on New Years Eve.
