Is the bob out? No—the hairstyle is a classic for a reason—but this summer, the girls are onto something new: the kitty cut, which creates lots of volume in fine hair.

When it comes to hairstyle trends lately, there’s no getting around layers. It’s why haircuts like the butterfly cut, the butterfly bob, and the wolf cut are so popular right now. What these cuts all have in common—besides being named after animals—is that they add incredible volume. It’s no wonder, then, that a new layered cut has shown up on the trend radar. And like the others, it has also borrowed its name from the animal kingdom. We’re talking, of course, about the kitty cut, which is currently one of the most searched hairstyle trends on social media and Google.

What is the kitty cut?

The kitty cut is a layered cut that falls somewhere between a heavy shag, like the wolf cut, and more subtle styles.

The kitty cut uses face-framing layers in the front section and lengths to flatter the face and collarbone and create additional volume. The result is a “feline” look thanks to integrated long curtain bangs. In contrast to the wolf cut, however, the kitty cut looks much tidier and more sophisticated. Who is the kitty cut suitable for?

This most likely depends on your hair structure. The kitty cut can work with straight, wavy, and curly hair, and can be adapted to virtually any length. But it looks particularly flattering when cut to a shoulder or collarbone length (as opposed to a shorter bob). If you’re interested in switching to a shaggier cut but aren’t totally confident about the change, the kitty cut is a good place to start.

How do you cut the kitty cut?

According to the experts at Keune Cosmetics, the natural fall of the hair should be taken into account when cutting the kitty cut; they recommend working from the center outward, with the sides cut diagonally. In the front, for the curtain bangs, work with a triangle section and then use the point cut to add layers.

What’s the best way to style the kitty cut?

For more texture, first apply mousse to the hair and work in heat protection. The best way to style the kitty cut is with a round brush or the Dyson Airwrap to enhance the natural waves. Texture spray provides more hold and movement at the same time.
