Over the past 12 months there’s been quite an array of niche trends to sprout from the lockdown mania we’ve all experienced. We’re nostalgic over banana bread, 5for5 and dalgona coffee that took centre stage in lockdown 1.0.
Tasty treats have dominated social media and the latest interiors trend to emerge is getting our attention because of its likeness to the perennially popular baked good - the donut. It’s circular in shape and hollow in the middle, only it’s made out of ceramic so maybe don’t go biting into it like it’s a Krispy Kreme.

Donut vases have almost reached cult status on social media. While we were all once obsessed with the latest handbag and/or shoe trends, there’s just zero space for that in lockdown, so influencers and fashion-lovers alike are turning to homeware to get their styling fix.

If you need to host a large bouquet of flowers, the donut vase just won’t cut it due to its narrow neck and limited capacity for water volume. So when styling a donut vase, it’s probably best to stick to dried flowers, branches, twigs or pampas grass. Anything low-maintenance is a winner. In fact, the vase doesn’t even need to host a thing. Styled and layered amongst other nordic accessories on a shelving unit or dining table, they can be displayed simply as an ornament.

Donut vases and anything sculptural like this appeals to the minimalist design; it’s a chance to bring a bit of craftsmanship into your home. You’ll hear almost every interior designer mention bringing a variety of shapes and textures into homes to create character and rather fittingly, circular shapes are said to bring peace and serenity to the home with their smooth cornerless edge, so it’s win-win.

#Stayathome has been our mantra for a year now, our shopping weakness isn’t shoes, it’s vases. One more lockdown and our homes will be starting to look like the British museum.
