Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha - what’s the difference?
Eid al-Fitr (which literally means ‘festival of breaking the fast’) is a religious festival celebrated by Muslims across the world to mark the end of Ramadan, which is a month-long period of reflection, dawn-until-dusk fasting, community and prayer. Eid-Al-Adha is a festival celebrated by millions of Muslims around the world. It marks the completion of the Hajj (pilgrimage) rites at Minā, Saudi Arabia, near Mecca. The day of Eid-ul-Adha falls on the tenth day in the final (twelfth) month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar; Dhu-al-Hijjah.
When is Eid 2024?
Unlike other religious celebrations like Christmas, Eid occurs on a different date each year. This is because the Islamic calendar is based on moon cycles. Eid Al-Fitr took place in April earlier this year and Eid Al-Adha will likely fall on the beginning of next week . Muslims will spend the day dressing up in new clothes, visiting loved ones and enjoying traditional meals. They will often start their day with a visit to the mosque for morning prayers, and wish each other Eid Mubarak which translates to ‘Have a blessed Eid.’
GLAMOUR contributor Sidra Imtiaz gets most excited for the time with family. “I have a huge family and living in London means I don’t get to see them all together as much as I’d like, so coming together on Eid day always means so much to me.”
Although many Muslims will receive Eidi (money gifted on Eid days) from loved ones, over the recent years Eid has also been an occasion for gift giving. However, unlike Christmas, it isn’t as easy to find pre-made gifts for loved ones to mark the occasion. That’s why we’ve cherry-picked a selection of the best gifts for Eid to bring joy to him, her and everyone in between. From gifts for the home to sweet treats and the ultimate beauty must-haves, there’s a thoughtful Eid gift idea in the guide for everyone on your to-buy-for list.
