Although the back-to school tax-free shopping holiday will not be returning his year, there are deals to be had on the latest tech hardware for students headed to the classrooms this fall.

What is the difference between a Chromebook and a MacBook Air?

For students looking for a traditional laptop, the choices comes down to selecting from a range of PC laptops, Google-powered Chromebooks or Apple's MacBook line.

The Chromebook's operating system makes it easy for students to connect to their Google-powered apps, and works with Google's mobile system for students that have Android-driven devices.

Chromebooks are often more budget-friendly, making them a good option for students on tight budgets.

These work best for students who mainly use Google’s programs, email and storage platforms. The batteries tend to last a full school day.

Depending on the model, the 2024 Chromebook edition weighs between 2.2 to 3.5 pounds, meaning students shouldn't have any trouble toting it around.

An array of computer manufacturers build and sell Chromebooks, including Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Samsung.

Similarly, Apple's MacBook Air runs an operating system that seamlessly interconnects with Apple' range of devices, and comes with built-in apps for email, surfing the net and creating documents.

The MacBook Air weights around two pounds depending on model, making it one of the most portable laptops on the market.

MacBooks are known for their build quality, durability, and design. They are great for students already using iPhones or iPads because things like iMessage, iCloud and AirDrop carry across the devices.

MacBook batteries tend to last longer than laptops, but not as long as Chromebook. MacBooks also avoid becoming obsolete longer than laptops, meaning students might still be using them well after graduation.

What is the difference between Apple's iPad and Microsoft's Surface?

Students wanting a tablet that can also be used as a laptop computer will generally choose between Apple's iPad and Microsoft's Surface.

Both the iPad and Surface can be used as a tablet, and each be scaled up to laptop usage by connecting an external keyboard, monitor and mouse.

The iPad's operating system automatically connects to other Apple devices, while Microsoft's Surface runs on either Windows 10 or Windows 11. The choice may very well come down to your student's personal workflow and if they need better connectivity to certain Windows servers.

Windows laptops run a range of price points and work best with familiar programs like Excel, Outlook and Word. These are great for students who need a lot of computing power beyond basic homework and web surfing.
