Josh Karnes’ Olympic dreams will need to wait at least another four years.
Karnes, an Erie High graduate, fell short of qualifying for the United States Olympic men’s gymnastics team at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials, where he competed Thursday and Saturday against the nation’s best at Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His all-around score of 40.65 placed him 17th.
Karnes posted top scores in parallel bars, high bars
Karnes’ top events were the parallel bars (14.4 points) and high bars (13.15). He was one of 20 athletes who completed across these and four other individual disciplines, including pommel horse, rings, vault and floor exercise.
Karnes placed eighth on high bar, ninth on parallel bars and 12th on floor. His highest scores of both Thursday and Saturday’s sessions were earned on parallel bars.
The top two all-around scorers automatically qualified for the United States Olympic team and three other team members were selected at-large, as were two traveling alternates and one non-traveling alternate. Frederick Richard posted the best men’s score with 170.5 points.
Karnes, a rising senior at Penn State, was a 2024 NCAA All-American in the parallel bars and all-around. Former Nittany Lion Stephen Nedoroscik qualified for the Olympic team.
