2024 MLB mock draft roundup: Detroit Tigers linked to two top prep prospects

The Detroit Tigers will introduce a new crop of prospects to the organization's farm system this weekend.

While the team wraps up an up-and-down first half on Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Tigers front office will be working to determine who will potentially make up the future of the franchise.

The 2024 MLB draft is scheduled for Sunday-Tuesday, overlapping with the final day of the first half of the season and the first two days of the All-Star break.

This will be the second draft conducted by president of baseball operations Scott Harris, who took over the team at the end of the 2022 season, and the Tigers hold the 11th pick in the first round on Sunday.

In his first draft, Harris took Max Clark, a high-upside center fielder out of high school, with the No. 3 overall pick. He also picked up shortstop Kevin McGonigle at No. 37 and second baseman Max Anderson at No. 45 for the first three of 21 picks.

The Tigers have a top-10 farm system in most rankings, with a chance to add to that this weekend. Those pieces will likely stay in place through the end of the month rather than being shipped elsewhere in a deal before the trade deadline because of where the Tigers' find themselves in the standings (15 games back of Cleveland for division, 8 games back of the third AL wild-card spot entering Wednesday's game). The Tigers are more likely to be sellers than buyers, which could mean more prospects entering the farm.

Here's what a few MLB analysts predict the Tigers will do with the 11th pick in the first round of the MLB draft on Sunday.

MLB.com: SS/OF Konnor Griffin

Konnor Griffin smiles after receiving his trophy for Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year at Jackson Prep in Flowood, Miss., on Thursday, June 6, 2024.

Vitals: 6-4, 215.

School: Jackson Prep (committed to LSU).

Age: 18.

MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo has the Tigers taking high school shortstop/outfielder Konnor Griffin at 11 in his Fourth of July mock draft. Griffin, from Jackson, Mississippi, is rated as one of the top high school bats in the class.

"This is a spot that keeps getting high school buzz, with a strong chance they’ll take whichever of the top prep bats is still available," Mayo wrote. "It’s also the first spot high school lefty Cam Caminiti has been mentioned."

Another MLB.com writer, Jim Callis, has the Tigers taking first baseman Nick Kurtz out of Wake Forest.

"Once tied strongly to the Athletics, Kurtz has no obvious home in the top 10 selections and could be a steal here, the scary recent track record of college first baseman in the upper half of the first round nothwithstanding," Callis wrote. "The Tigers could take anyone else from the consensus top 10 who slips. They're strongly connected to Cam Caminiti, the best prep pitching prospect, though there's some recent intel that suggests that's overblown."

ESPN: LHP Cam Caminiti

Cam Caminiti takes a break while working out, July 1, 2024, at Banner Sports Medicine High Performance Center, Scottsdale, Arizona.

Vitals: 6-2, 195.

School: Saguaro High School (committed to LSU).

Age: 17.

ESPN's Kiley McDaniel predicts the Tigers will go with Caminiti, a left-handed pitcher coming out of high school in Scottsdale, Arizona (and the cousin of 1996 ML MVP Ken Caminiti). He also mentioned prep third baseman Chase Hanlan as a potential target with Detroit's second pick, if available.

"Detroit is considering all player demographics here and seems to be primed to jump on any player who slips to this pick as opposed to targeting a certain type. Caminiti (cousin of Ken) should go in the next few picks if he doesn't go here, and I think Griffin would also get a long look if he makes it to this pick.

The Athletic: SS/OF Konnor Griffin

Keith Law landed on the high school bat for the Tigers, slotting Griffin to Detroit, as well.

"Griffin is the high-ceiling, high-risk guy among the prep players and could still end up in the top 10," Law wrote.

Baseball America: LHP Cam Caminiti

Baseball America's Carlos Collazo also landed on Caminiti to Detroit based on the links between the two in the draft process.

"The Tigers continue to be heavily linked to Caminiti, and I see no real reason to move off this pick even with Nick Kurtz sliding out of the top 10 in this scenario," Collazo wrote. "It sounds like Caminiti has really popped on a number of teams’ models, and he remains the favorite to be the first high school pitcher off the board."

Bleacher Report: LHP Cam Caminiti

Joel Reuter with Bleacher Report also pegged Caminiti to become a Tiger.

"The 6'2", 195-pound southpaw has four quality pitches, including a fastball that has touched 98 mph and a pair of breaking pitches that have both flashed plus," Reuter wrote. "It's his overall athleticism on the mound that helps separate him from the rest of the high school pitching class, and he played center field when he wasn't pitching this spring."

CBS Sports: LHP Cam Caminiti

The Caminiti drumbeat is consistent with CBS' Mike Axisa.

"The Tigers and Caminiti has been connected steadily the last few weeks," he wrote. "Detroit has swung for the fences with high-upside high schoolers in recent years (Max Clark in 2023, Jackson Jobe in 2021, Riley Greene in 2019) and Caminiti, the best prep pitcher in the class, would be more of the same."
