Experts slugfest: Our ridiculously early 2025 Oscar predictions, updated

2024 is halfway over, so Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with some updates to their ridiculously early Oscar predictions.

The first half of the year has seen some huge smashes (new billion club member “Inside Out 2”), some… not so much (poor “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”) and some Cannes hits (“Anora,” “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” “Emilia Perez“). Save for 2021’s “Titane,” the last three Palme d’Or champs have been nominated for Best Picture, with “Parasite” (2019) winning, so Sean Baker’s “Anora” feels solid for a nomination. Will either “Emilia Perez,” which received the Best Actress prize for Zoe Saldana, Karla Sofia Gascon, Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz, or Mohammad Rasoulof‘s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” which received a special award, join “Anora” for double Cannes representation?

In acting, neither of us expects a second straight Best Actress nomination for reigning champ Emma Stone in Yorgos Lanthimos’ anthology film “Kinds of Kindness.” One of us, however, does have her co-star, Cannes Best Actor winner Jesse Plemons, in… for now. But is Colman Domingo, fresh off his maiden nomination for “Rustin,” the one to beat with “Sing Sing”?

Elsewhere, we discuss whether this will finally be Samuel L. Jackson and Amy Adams‘ year and more.
