Hannah Einbinder (‘Hacks’) takes the lead against Meryl Streep (‘Only Murders’) in tight Emmy race

The lead has changed in our Emmy odds for Best Comedy Supporting Actress. The longtime front-runner based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users has been awards darling Meryl Streep for her new role in the third season of “Only Murders in the Building.” But as of June 17 — right in the middle of Emmy nominations voting — Hannah Einbinder has moved ahead of her legendary rival for her continuing role on “Hacks.”

The race is so close that both women get odds of 4/1, and the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed are evenly split with seven picking Einbinder and seven picking Streep. But our other elite Emmy pundits have been shifting over to the “Hacks” star. Eight out of 11 Gold Derby Editors pick Einbinder, as do 12 of our Top 24 Users and 12 of our All-Star Top 24. Compare that to Streep, who is backed by three Editors, seven of our Top 24 and nine All-Stars.

You might think it would be tough to beat Streep for any acting award, but the queen of nominations doesn’t always win. For instance, she has claimed three Emmys throughout her career, but the last time she was nominated, for Best Drama Supporting Actress in 2020 for “Big Little Lies,” she lost to Julia Garner, who won the second of her three Emmys for the crime drama “Ozark.” And for her role in “Only Murders,” Streep recently lost the Golden Globe for Best TV Supporting Actress to Elizabeth Debicki for “The Crown.” Streep was also snubbed by SAG Awards voters.

That said, Einbinder hasn’t won an Emmy yet for “Hacks.” She earned nominations in this category in 2021 and 2022, but those awards went to Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”) and Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Abbott Elementary”), respectively. Season three of “Hacks” could be Einbinder’s time to shine, though, especially after a season finale with a “gasp-worthy final scene,” for which she was singled out by media outlets as “emotionally raw.” Her co-star Jean Smart (already a two-time Emmy champ for “Hacks”) sang her praises as well. The TV academy could soon follow.
