‘RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars’ season 9 episode 7 recap: ‘Meeting in the Ladies Room’

RuPaul‘s Drag Race All Stars” continued its 9th season on Friday, June 21 with the seventh episode featuring returning queens from seasons past. Making their way back into the Werk Room for the second time are Angeria Paris VanMichaels (season 14), Gottmik (season 13), Jorgeous (season 14), Nina West (season 11), and Plastique Tiara (season 11). Three queens are returning for the third time: Roxxxy Andrews (season 5 and All Stars 2), Shannel (season 1 and All Stars 1), and Vanessa Vanjie Mateo (seasons 10 and 11).

In addition to their chance at the coveted crown, this season the queens are competing to have a $200,000 contribution, provided by The Palette Fund, to a charity of their choice. Series judges RuPaul Charles and Michelle Visage will be joined on the dais by friends and series regulars Carson Kressley, Ts Madison, and Ross Mathews as well as a rotating cast of guest judges to help determine episodic winners and their choice for “next drag superstar.”

In episode 6, the queens attended the “National Drag Convention Roast” and lit each other up with shady jokes in front of a live audience. While the judges thought it was one of the strongest roasts ever, their personal winners were Plastique and Angeria. After lip syncing against each other for charity, Angeria won and earned the right to block Roxxxy from earning another Beautiful Benefactress Badge this week.

In the race to be one of the three queens with the most badges by the end of the season, Roxxxy and Plastique are at the top with three while Jorgeous, Angeria, Vanjie and Gottmik all have two. Nina has one and Shannel has none.

Now, check out our recap of episode 7, titled “Meeting in the Ladies Room,” featuring guest judge Colton Haynes below:

With Angeria cutting off Roxxxy once again with the Ruby Snippers, Gottmik referred to it as “The War of the Snippers” because it was becoming a tit for tat between the two queens at the top. Roxxxy accepted that because she has the most badges she understood why she was blocked, but she also told Angeria that she thinks they’re playing different games. She added that she thinks Angeria is playing a game and her decision is “not just about badges” because there was “too many dramatics.” Angeria insisted that she was torn and legitimately didn’t know what her decision would be until she made it.

In the morning, Ru arrived with the Pit Crew and baskets of fruit to play “Fruity Patooty” where the queens would move the contents of the basket into an empty basket one item at a time. The catch of the mini challenge was that they could only move the fruits and veggies from between their legs and that the selected winner would earn immunity from having the Ruby Snippers used against them in the next cycle. When all was said and done, Nina successfully transferred nine items and earned the immunity.

Then, for the maxi challenge, Ru surprised the queens with the revelation that they’d be performing alongside her in a spoof short film “Meeting in the Ladies Room.” Instead of choosing roles in this scenario, each of the queens had a script and role already decided specifically for them by the writers and producers. Roxxxy’s role was a parody based on “Dynasty,” Shannel’s on “Mommie Dearest,” Jorgeous’ on “Boys in the Band,” Plastique on “All About Eve,” Vanjie’s on “Showgirls,” Nina on “Valley of the Dolls,” Angeria on “Mildred Pierce,” and Gottmik on “The Mirror Crack’d.”

When on set with Ru later, the queens were all most concerned about being “professional” and cool under pressure. Jorgeous felt like she was staying on the trend of hearing Ru’s advice and applying it to the challenges, Shannel felt overwhelmed by her insecurity of having not won a challenge yet, and Roxxxy had difficulty “not cracking up” while Ru had a tough time not cracking up in scenes with Angeria and Gottmik.

On the Main Stage, Ru was joined by Michelle, Carson and this week’s special guest judge Colton as the queens walked the runway in the “Widow, Weep for Me” category and then the group watched the final cut of “Meeting in the Ladies Room.” Based on those performances, the judges complimented a polished look from Nina and her “riveting” turn in the short film. Ru even said that Nina was “very prepared.” Michelle thought Roxxxy was “breathtaking,” but Carson thought she could have been more over the top than she was. Colton thought Angeria had great physical comedy and Ru said that she knows what her character is and always brings it. Michelle told Plastique that she made funny choices in the film and they all thought she was beautiful on the runway. They thought Shannel as tasteful and rich with both looks she showed this week, but Ru thought she struggled connecting in the scene. Michelle noticed that Jorgeous continued in her breakthrough of delivering in comedy situations. Colton told Gottmik that acting seems to come natural to her and Carson agreed. Vanjie was told she looked “incredibly sexy” on the runway and both Michelle and Colton thought she gave a “different interpretation” of the film that inspired her theme.

After further deliberation while the queens “Untucked” backstage, Ru announced the decision that this week’s top two performers were Nina and Angeria. In their head-to-head lip sync to “Lovergirl” by Teena Marie, Angeria was more appropriately dressed to move around the stage with ease and strong choreography while Nina was left to maneuver as best she could in her large widow’s gown from the runway. Based on her performance, Angeria won once again for the second time in a row. Angeria won the $10,000 cash tip for her charity, but Ru also bestowed $2500 upon Nina’ charity for her not having to use her immunity this week.

As the overall winner, Angeria earned the right once again to block another queen from earning a badge next week. Having just chosen Roxxxy last week, Angeria felt it might be prudent to finally cut off the other badge leader, Plastique, but instead she gave the Ruby Snippers to Gottmik.

NEXT TIME: Gottmik reacts to Angeria cutting her off and then the queens create new garments in a runway design challenge based on RuPaul songs.
