3. Colman Domingo (Sing Sing)
4. Oscar Isaac (In The Hand Of Dante)
5. John David Washington (The Piano Lesson)
ReplyCopy URLJune 3, 2024 at 12:47 pm #1205850557I really don’t buy Hanks.
- Zemekis’ track record is…spotty at best.
- Hanks has been making straight-to-Oscar-flop bait forever now, this feels like yet another one
- Most of all, this being the first movie vying for awards to openly embrace AI use to digitally de-age Hanks is going to get so much backlash I don’t think they’ll want to recognize any part of the film
I’ve got Domingo, Craig, Fiennes as higher-likelihood nominees, but the only one I’m fully confident in is Domingo. After them it’s a whole list of guys about evenly in a free-for-all. I’m excited for Venice to hopefully bring some clarity because right now this category seems really wide open, especially since Cannes ultimately mostly removed/significantly dropped potential contenders here (Driver, Stan, Gere) rather than add any.

He lusts over a young man and IS a heroin addict

My worry with Fiennes is they like to ignore him, but maybe in a sparser year like this is looking to be they finally don’t. Also that I’m not completely sold on Conclave playing as an “awards” film due to the pulpy book it’s based on and Berger being a mostly workman-like director whose Oscar success with AQOTWF has to be in large part because if there’s one thing the Academy can’t resist it’s a war movie. But I want to believe in the cast at least getting recognition regardless.
Craig is getting a lot of sight-unseen buzz, and a lot of people declaring early it’ll be between him and Colman. The amount of confidence without cause this early on is giving me some Jackman flashbacks. Hopefully it won’t go that way again.
But yeah, I think everyone except Domingo is a question mark. Some bigger than others, but question marks.

So ultra bait. He’s competitive to win.

I don’t think Smashing Machine is coming out this year. But whenever it is released, if he’s nominated I’ll make the follow-up short to Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe and eat my own.

I’m sure he’s thankful for his costar.ReplyCopy URLThe Sunne in Splendour.
