Unlike Long Day’s, blitz is premiering this year With a limited release in theaters before arriving on Apple tv+ on November 22nd
Kinda weird that no US distributor accepted to purchase the theatrical rights

Not really, given that most people would just wait to see it at Apple. The b.o. returns of films that are produced or already known that will be distributed by streaming services suffer from this… even DC and Marvel films are, knowing that in less than 6 months they would be included in the service, hence why only big guns get good b.o. and films like Quantummania and The Marvels tanked… I hate to say this, but Marvel/Disney and DC/Warner/HBO should be totally making clear that those big event films would not be released digitally in any form till at least 1 year since its release… THEN, people would be coming to them at the theaters. I remember when films like ET could stay 2 years available in theaters or The Rocky Horror Picture Show would become a theatre-event to celebrate. When going to the movies was a celebration, but streamers are focused in “immediate relief”. Fast and easy. Treating movies like kleenex, ready to be consumed and disposable right after.

no “the outrun” will just be forgotten about and buried. Same way that Lily Gladstone’s lead role last year in “the unknown country” had no sway over her getting nominated for “kotfm” lol

Lead actor is rarely competitive
I think the last time it was remotely competitive was 2019 with Phoenix, Driver, DeNiro, DiCaprio, Sandler, Murphy, Pryce, Bale, Kang Ho, Banderas
That was hard year to only pick 5 candidates, that’s why i’m a firm believer the academy should increase the number to 6 slots, since they admit hundreds of submissions from around the world every year unlike the emmys.

The name of the Michel Franco movie with Jessica Chastain referred to above is “Dreams.” Franco is still editing and does not think the film will be ready in time to screen at the Venice Film Festival. ReplyCopy URLJuly 3, 2024 at 12:58 am #1205877067The more I think about it, the more I see 3 almost locked nominees, already, unless huge surprise.
- Sofía-Gascón. Cannes winner, would make history and title character.
- June Squibb. Raved film and performance, all sympathies on her, no one would hate her.
- Swinton. Blind faith on what Almodóvar could have done with her. Her win was in Supporting, so she could even win this one.
I’d say Jolie is almost locked as well as Maria, for Pablo Larraín, who got Portman and Stewart nominated for similar projects.
So only 1 spot free, folks.

Because Challengers got much better critical reception and their boxoffice isn’t that far apart to say one has huge advantage over the other. I’d say both get forgotten by the start of the season unless by some miracle festival hopefuls flop with critics like most of the Cannes batch.
That said, Top 10s that are banded around here that erase Zendaya are invalid. She may not get a nom in the wake of Mikey Madison staking the It Girl spot but she is in Top 10 atm cause she is seen and got genuine raves.
Blitz is BAFTA only thing. Premiere at LFI confirms it. It won’t have global appeal like WW2 themed winner Bomb Boy.
