After having been previously announced in 2015, Sony Pictures is developing a film adaptation of the 2014 hit Broadway show, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Tom Hanks is producing with Oscar nominee Lisa Cholodenko directing from a screenplay she’s co-writing with Stuart Blumberg. Daisy Edgar-Jones is set to star as Carole King.

She has a scene in Under the Banner of Heaven in which she sings Bette Midler’s The Rose but it’s nothing special.

In a recent interview with Variety, Daisy Edgar-Jones revealed that she’s no longer attached to this project. She said “I love Carole and I love that story, but it was a year ago that they decided [to no longer pursue it]. I did learn a lot of piano. I think it’s a gorgeous story, and the script probably needs a little more time in the oven. But I did meet Carole King on Zoom, and I was like, “This is the coolest thing ever.” She really enjoyed “Normal People,” so she was a fan of that and I was a fan of hers. I get so starstruck by musicians, much more than actors, and Carole was one where it was quite hard to keep my cool.”

Sources tell Variety that the project is still in development at the studio without Edgar-Jones. When news of her involvement broke in 2022, her deal was not yet closed and last year’s writers and actors strikes delayed the project further.
